Oh Britain, what have you done (part ∞+3)?

It's an aspect that is either 'a bunch of unelected, unaccountable toffs' or 'a vital part of the democratic process' depending on whether it's blocking something you want or something you don't want. (Not you personally. 'One' just sounds a bit poncey).

I'm in favour of abolishing the HOL. However, for good or ill, it exists and is part of our parliamentary democracy. You can't just ignore it and May is trying to play it.

It is possible to both want the PM to respect current parliament while also wanting to change it. She's just pi%%ed because the Tories don't have a majority for once.

I'd respect her more is she said "the HOL is an anachronism and must be reformed or abolished". Not likely though, is it?

What’s remarkable though is that The Telegraph and the DM are calling for the destruction of the HoL (along with calling judges “Enemies if the people” and threatening to publish their home addresses). Neither paper does socialism but they are doing something resembling national socialism.

Blair interviewed on R4 this morning, about 8.45 if people want to find it. On the subject of Brexit. All the usual caveats, much as I dislike Bliar, etc, etc, more sense and straight talking than I've heard on the BBC for some time. Funny how the interviewer felt the need to grab the interview by the reins and divert it to the subject of rendition and did Bliar know about it back then. I attribute this to the beebs well known truth intolerance re tory brexit and the need to shut it down.

Still worth hearing. Christ on a bike, what upside down times we are living through - who'd've ever thought I'd be espousing listening to Bliar for the truth?

Those who advocate abolition of the Lords would do us a service if they explained what they planned to replace it with, and how we the electorate would get our say.

Replacing the Lords with an elected upper house needs care - the US system is, well, u/s.

At the very least we need a robust system of PR to elect at least one of the Houses, having both chambers subject to FPTP would be just a recipe for party political deadlock and sclerosis.

This is because she is a witch. She often wears a pointed hat and flies about on her leopard skin disguised broomstick shoes.

I advocate random selection of the adult population for HoL membership, as is done with jury service. That would eliminate both political bias and self-serving opportunists.

That would be worse than national service as far as I’m concerned. We need more expertise, not less, surely?

How about a mixed house? A proportion of PR voted senators, a proportion of nominated ‘experts’ and a proportion of the demos itself?

Its remit could be the same as the Lords-call it that if you will-a revising house.

Stephen

The thing about the unelected toffs is they often have a degree of common sense and altruism (if they turn up). More so than our elected representatives so I don’t want another House full of them. The Great and the Good worry too much about appearing great and good. Random ‘jurors’ with a small ‘can you spot that everything in the Daily Mail is complete toss’ IQ test would work.
