I wonder how much of this traffic can be transferred to container ports?
How would that help?.

How many of the 17.2m is many?
Do you have an example of what this rose-tinted image ‘many’ voted for looks like and do you have actual evidence people voted for it and in massive numbers?
In 4 years I haven’t seen any real evidence anywhere that shows clearly why 17.2m voted leave. I suspect there are many different reasons, but you never know, perhaps this rose-tinted image will account for millions of the 17.2m.
In the unlikely event of a no deal, sourcing goods from other parts of the world, using automated container terminals and other ports would reduce traffic from the Dover Calais route. How would that help?.

This an old article but highlights there is a downside if the French unions blockade the ports.

They will still need inspection and all the administration involved and you cannot just wave it through as that would fall foul of WTO rules.
Besides, there could be brown people hiding in there. They will still need inspection and all the administration involved and you cannot just wave it through as that would fall foul of WTO rules.
No insider information is required to see that there will be a not BINO feal; we don't have long to wait to find out who is correct. Are you NDA'd or can you tell us where you get your inside information from?
Which other parts of the world?
"In 2016 more than £30.3bn of Britain's food imports and £12.3bn of its food exports were with the EU, totalling almost £1,300 of trade every second" (The Guardian)
"Based on the farm-gate value of unprocessed food in 2018, the UK supplied just over half (53%) of the food consumed in the UK. The leading foreign supplier of food consumed in the UK were countries from the EU (28%). Africa, Asia, North and South America each provided a 4% share of the food consumed in the UK." (Gov.UK)

I did a list recently of goods we could buy elsewhere to balance our trade with the EU.
The French refuse to reform and have a tight grip on their governments that come and go, each trying to get a grip of a changing world. What they cannot control is industry leaving the country and whether other countries wish to buy their goods or use their services. If the Calais/Dover route becomes a bottleneck they will lose business and so will we, but business will find an alternative.

There is always another way.It would also fall foul of "taking back control of our borders".
Maybe Bojo could ask Mexico to pay for an automated container terminals?
No France and Germany are our friends and trading partners.Buying from distant countries will massively increase the carbon footprint of such products.
Plus the EU has stricter environmental, animal protection and quality standards.
Why do you wish to buy from elsewhere, do these things not matter to you?
So now the enemy is France, not Germany?

The quality of irony is not strained.
