Loudness Wars, is the end actually coming?

I remember reading an interview with Owen Morris who produced and mastered Oasis's What's the Story Morning Glory. The brickwalling was intentional, sound wise. The interview was about why the remastered version of the album, which just came out an which he oversaw was just as compressed as the...

Getting the best out of a Rega DAC (or any Dac)?

I forgot to say, thanks to all for the suggestions and the lively debate thus far. I do agree and see 'these forums as a way of getting information about things people have tried' but do appreciate a healthy form of scepticism to inform observations/conclusions, when those observations occur.

Getting the best out of a Rega DAC (or any Dac)?

Well, the suggestions on this thread have been helpful. The Saturn going into my Rega DAC still sounds supreme and I have limited options with alternatives. I wanted to avoid using a CD player as a transport for a host of reasons (I prefer listening to entire albums but haven't found the time...

Getting the best out of a Rega DAC (or any Dac)?

No, I'm still here - just catching up on the thread after the w.e.!

Getting the best out of a Rega DAC (or any Dac)?

My undergraduate degree in engineering is from a while ago -- and it's been a while since I've practiced -- so, I'm speculating (and maybe you are as well?). Your statement assumes that the disc readers in both transports are identical and are extracting the exact same information, in the...

Getting the best out of a Rega DAC (or any Dac)?

I have to say that I've compared the Rega Saturn and my Sony blu-ray player as transports into my Rega DAC and the Saturn far outclassed the blu-ray player in terms of clarity, soundstage and dynamics.

Getting the best out of a Rega DAC (or any Dac)?

That actually is surprising -- I've never compared the two. I usually use the battery on my MBA solely out of not wanting to lug the power supply around (it's usually fully charged from work). I do remember a stereophile review of the dacmagic where someone from CA replied to the review and...

Getting the best out of a Rega DAC (or any Dac)?

With the SBT no longer being manufactured, does any one have any ideas for a suitable alternative? Considering something like this or trying out on of the USB power supplies suggested above. Thanks!

Radline, interesting suggestion, I'll look into it!

Getting the best out of a Rega DAC (or any Dac)?

Hi Steven, yeah, it seems like attempts to better the Mac to Dac link cost quite a bit, and still may only approximate the quality of the CD source. I'm wondering if something like a SBT or a Sonos connect or the like might better approximate the quality of the Saturn as a transport?

Getting the best out of a Rega DAC (or any Dac)?

Hi Tony, yes, thanks, I've tried it. I found to be ok - just slightly better than the USB in on the Rega DAC. But I was using a slightly inexpensive glass toslink cable. Maybe a better cable will help?

Getting the best out of a Rega DAC (or any Dac)?

I've had my Rega DAC for a little while now, and as I've been listening to music through headphones lately (sleeping toddler), I've used it with a MacBook Air, Amarra (and Audirvana+), an MF Vlink2 and a headphone amp as my main system. The trouble is, I've just upgraded my headphone amp to a...

    Happy with what I have...

Really great topic, and I can identify with the sentiment of the OP. I'm about 20 years younger and feeling nearly the same way. Actually, I feel like I'm coming full circle in a way. The greatest music listening experiences I could remember, prior to now, we're through a well regarded Sony CD...

    cans for an iPod

I use AKG IP2 in ear monitors, these are pro audio in ears and have a similar character to the Senn CX300 but with more of an even or flat frequency response rather than the Senn's more 'smile' curve. They're my 'go to' earphones as they sound good, they're relatively inexpensive, well built...

    Brio-R vs. Nait5i vs. Sonneteer Campion/Alabaster

I heard the Brio-R recently and I was very impressed. I would have classed it up there with the Nait XS at a fraction of the cost. I thought it did all the hifi things right (imaging, soundstage, clarity) and had a lot of grunt and musicality. Then again, I heard it power a very £££ pair of...
