We’re All Going on a Summer Holiday

A holiday is something I need to get around to at some point, I've never managed one.

They're a bit awkward on your own and I don't have the confidence to pull it off.
I know what you mean, maybe how you feel too, but...
My mum used to holiday alone well into her late '80's, isn't a very outgoing person but she always made friends and had people to talk to. For decades she used to travel around Spain alone (even went to Russia, America and China alone) and never had any problems, just good holidays and plenty of memories.
I don't like eating out alone, haven't had many holidays on my own, but it's not hard to find a friendly face if you want conversation, but if not then a book, a camera or even a phone (I'm on my own in a restaurant right now) and it suddenly feels OK.
It would be a shame not to get away and enjoy some of what the world has to offer, I hope you can.

Used to go every year, but not for absolutely ages. It’s a fabulous area, had quite a few school friends who lived on the islands.

be our third trip - this time St Mary's, Tresco, and St Martins.

Last time went to Bryher

sorry to say this, but that is just so PFM. Write with an authoritative force, but based on experience from 20 years ago.

Gosh but I didn't realise how institutionalised by pfm I am! I have heard from time to time that Margate has been, well, improved but I'd no idea it had been transformed as it really was the pits a couple of decades and more ago. My 'authoritative voice' (force?) was based upon teaching at many Margate schools from '74 to around '95. My friend, who's lived and taught in Ramsgate and Broadstairs for 40+ years, and my daughter who still lives in R'gate, will be interested in your glowing recommendation.

This time last week I was in Kefalonia with my wife (both 70 this year and 30th anniversary next week), my two sisters and their husbands. One sister married for 40 years this year, the other 43 years and she and her husband have recently retired so lots of celebrating to do while we were away. Our first family holiday together since we were in our teens. Wonderful island, lovely people and great food:D

Hypocrite

Not really, I am a centrist remember.

As a Social Democrat, I have free reign to spend my income, providing I have met all of my financial obligations as a citizen such as having paid the correct amount of income tax etc, and that includes five nights at an Airbnb in Deal with my wife and Cavapoo.

You were a supporter of Starmer the Self Declared Socialist not long ago.

Was there a few weeks ago when we moored up for a night in Fiskardo. Just love the place.

Not sure about the capitalisation of “self declared” and maybe a hyphen missing.

Anyway, I digress. So I am a hypocrite and Sir Kier is a liar. You throw insults around like confetti and then get a toot on when someone uses your first name or mentions your hols (which you had a dedicated thread on) - odd stuff.

Everyone should have the right to go on holiday unhindered, but as you deny that right to some yet announce a luxury holiday yourself, the charge of hypocrite stands

With the ending of Covid restrictions, it seems lots of folks are either going on holiday (our youngest flies to Lanzarote today) or have booked a holiday recently. So where are fishies heading to this summer and why that particular destination?

To get he ball rolling we have five days on the east Kent coast next month :

1. have travelled through the county but never stayed there
2. visit Canterbury
3. take in the coastal towns from where Turner did his fantastic paintings
4. visit Leeds castle

Wow. You are holidaying near where we live. Try and fit in a ramble and pub lunch on the North Downs way or Saxon shore way if you can. Ham marshes north of Faversham with a visit to the Shipwright's arms is my favourite pub walk in Kent.

We're dumping the boys on my sister in law and having a few weekend breaks in the UK, next is a woodland shepherd's hut in Dorset with it's own private lake. A week in Cumbria with the boys to visit my parents is also pencilled in. Recent disruptions have put me right off international travel, but I would love to get back to the Greek mountains.

Lots of folk here seem to have very strong opinions of the relative merits of North Kent towns. FWIW, the gentrification of Margate is somewhat overstated by those who have moved there and Ramsgate harbour is delightful and definitely on the up - unfortunately there are voices for on the local council for a rather tasteless retail development that could destroy it's character.

Sandwich and Deal well worth a visit. And the North Downs between the M2 and M20 are a stunning AONB. That's why we decided to move there from Faversham.

I surprised myself when I first took a big holiday on my own (a week in an luxury mountain resort in Crete to go mountain biking) and discovered I absolutely loved it. But, I am quite happy and comfortable going to restaurants and the cinema on my own, so am probably a compete weirdo.

Whitstable is not everyone's oyster and Hernia Bay in a pain in the gut. Birchington takes some beating and Margate was tat but is now Tate. Palm Bay is conspicuous by its absence of palms and Dickensian Broadstairs falls short of Great Expectations. Ramsgate is the one for ewe and ancient Sandwich is your bread and butter. A good Deal can be had along the coast but Dover's sole attraction is the White Cliffs Experience.

What is this proposed retail development in Ramsgate, then (or is it Margate) ?

We went for a wander round Faversham the other day and thought it was a lovely part of the world. Found some cheap jazz records in the stall in the market but didn't spot local resident Evan Parker :)
