Tannoy Westminster Build.

Many thanks for all the positive feedback here, its really helpful to hear.

I really like the walnut used on the originals but for me it dates them a little, they are quite a grand old fashioned looking speaker in my eyes so i hoped they would look a little more contemporary in a lighter oak and i think they do even though oak is a little tricky to work with sometimes.
The drivers will be 3839W or 3839TW depending on what Lockwood can do for me. The 3836's that i have do adopt the tulip waveguide (TW) so i would imagine it will be those. I can get them re coned in the dark royal blue color and crest for a small price so am considering that but they will be packed up and sent on Tuesday.

David, (and anyone who cares for a listen) you would be welcome anytime,if you fancy a trip to Brighton just let me know.

...on with the sanding.

Thanks again Si.

might take you up on that Simon... a trip to Brighton on a sunny weekend is a nice thing anyway..!

You would be very welcome, i will pm my details to you.

Thanks for all the positive feedback on these speakers, the finishing has taken me every evening this week for about 4 or 5 hrs an evening, waiting for drivers now.
I made a "stretcher" for the grille cloth, i am not a fan of the original Tannoy cloth so have gone with a very fine painters linen over an oak frame-feedback on this would be good.

Painters linen looks v nice - where did you get it and will you use it for the main driver grille?
If its ok for the main driver can you let me know the weight /weave as this will be just the ticket for my project from the looks of it.
Best
Fraser

Thanks Fraser,

Good to get some feed back on the grille, i got it from a specialist art shop in Hove called Lawrences-its the only Linen they do, £30 per meter. Let me know if you need any more help with that one, i have some small off cuts i could send you if that helps before you order any.

Hit a big stumbling block today as the drivers i have are in fact 3836 and cannot be converted to 3839-the entire baffle has been cut around this driver:(

Am hoping that a pair HPD 385s will fit, otherwise I'm stuffed!

...anyone want some wardrobes?

Cheers Si.

I hope the drivers work out ok for you. Your build quality and finishing is simply stunning. I would love to be able to build something like those. Thanks for the postings and photos.

Out of interest, what plans are you working from?

You and me both Stuart, i'm sure i can do something. The plans were developed from a set that were posted on DIY Audio site and then tweaked from measurements from the originals, the back loaded horn was the tricky area so built two of them which i will experiment with when i have sound, i imagine the one that is closest to the original may be the one i go with but the other that the Serbian builder used is producing great results...hopefully we will see, just had an Acoustic Masterpiece amp turn up on my doorstep so really looking forward to getting them going...maybe some unforseen alterations on the cards before that moment but hey ho

I've got to say these look absolutely superb. The craftsmanship is fantastic and I'm looking forward to seeing the final results.

James

Cheers James,

Am going to go with some hpd 385's and original cross overs i think-if they fit, I should have them soon.

I will try the cross overs that Nick has built but as they were for the 3839's i am not sure where i stand with those-waiting to hear back from Nick.

I will post some pics when i get there!

Ta Si.

I can't help commenting on the superb standard of your cabinet construction - and wondering what Tannoy themselves would make of your efforts. I think they'd be impressed - I know I am, and envious, as when they're finished I imagine they'll sound wonderful.

Thanks again folks,

Ok the drivers are not hear yet but hoping for Monday. Can anyone offer advice on tweaking the original cross overs for the HPD 385's as they will have to be changed a little owing to the efficiency of the Bass driver i am guessing-i am a cross over novice so could anyone potentially aid me with this area?

Many Thanks in advance Si.

Regarding the cross over, I have gleaned a little from the Yahoo group and a few other sources so am on the right track i think-i have a schematic for a MG 15"for the Autograph which may be ok for the Westminster, component changes are changing the cap on the input to hf section to 10uf, changing the 50 ohm resistor to 100 ohms and the 20 ohm resistor to 10 ohms, another important change seems to be moving the drivers tap of the autoformer to the lowest rather than the second lowest tap which steps the tweeter level up more to match the efficiency of the woofer with horn loading to its full range-i will work through it with Nick and see how we get on-the drivers turned up yesterday so measured out and cut new carriers for them so the cross over is the last piece if the jigsaw.

Anyone else have any suggestions on cross over changes for the 385 cross over for use in the Westminster?

Cheers Si

Maybe measure them in your own listening room and make changes based on that?

Thanks David, yes this will certainly be an interesting exercise, trying to get them as close as i can before i begin that stage, I have the original cross overs for the 385's so am going to transplant the autoformer into the externals with a few more tweaks in the caps and resistors, just looking for any thoughts as cross overs are not my field of expertise by any means.

Si.
