After my Quad 33 had its latest fault last week (won’t play LPs in stereo), I went back to my Quad 34 for a few days. Thing is, I really prefer the 33 (although there’s nothing wrong with the 34) but it’s getting a bit flakey and sadly doesn’t seem like a good longterm choice for preamp duties, although the 303 has been faultless all round. I tried a Leak 20 with passive recently which was very nice but I felt really comfortable with the 33/303 pair. Tonight I’ve put in my Graham Slee Accession M and NAD C316BEE just to have a change whilst I decide what to do.
It’s making me think of having a (near) complete system overhaul. I put an wanted ad out for a Croft Phono Integrated which I really liked last year, so maybe that will turn up. I’m also thinking of either some kind of vintage turntable again - 301/401, 124, Lenco - or modding my 1200G to try SPUs. I could keep my 1200G and get a heavy arm put on it but am open to options eg. the Lenco-based PTP Solid12 with Schick 12” arm looks interesting. So my amps and turntable are all up in the air again. One thing I know is, the Falcon LS3/5a are staying put.
(The Freddie Hubbard LP was a Christmas present from my sister this year)
