Record Shops RIP ...................................

Also, Second Layer say you can still do option 2 from a location 2 mins from Archway is it.

I know it's not the right place for it and it's too late but...I popped into RTE tonight to catch a talk by Chris salewicz and Adrian Boot on reggae and Jamaica generally. They were promoting an 8CD and book box set called Sound System. An excellent evening. More of this please record shops.

Rounder closing is a shame, I went in a few weeks ago is it

Nearly always found something there to pick up, but perhaps they are too generalist, and got hit by Ape and Resident doing the same sort of thing. The centre of gravity of the Records Shops in Brighton is hearing north to the North Laines more, with that one above Wolf & Gypsy doing more new Minimal Techno and other genres.

Still miss Covert more than any others there.

Report from Cheltenham is it.

The shop Sounds Good has closed down. It specialised in Show Tunes and Musicals, so I never troubled it with a purchase, but a shame to see it go anyway.

The shop has still retained some musical heritage by turning into a violin shop there.

I seem to remember The Record Shop is rarely open, so left that for another go.

Better news from Rise, Badlands and Vinyl Vault, some more albums acquired in each, particularly in Rise, and several books too.

Couldn't find the NOT RIP thread...so...visited That Lincoln today and found a v decent shop at the bottom of Steep Hill* in an arcade called Back To Mono. They had plenty of stereo records to light my candle incl some Virgin Prunes, Happy Mondays, Monochrome Set and Art Blakey and his Jazz Messengers (actually in mono!). They also sell old bits of hifi kit. Altogether a very nice experience.

* note to self - get back to the gym as that incline back to the car was hard work.

Thanks for that, will add to the shops to visit list is it.

Northampton and area this week I think.

DS

ps Virgin Prunes? aren't they filed under 'Goth' ?

Have to shout for beanos which closed down a few years ago in Croydon! Sadly missed. I

I have since moved away to a place where no one cares about music let alone vinyl.

Whatever you do and whever you are ........

"Keep the faith."

A fabulously transferable quote from the amazing Rory Aldus referring to backpacking / globe trotting.

Enjoy,

Mike

Haven't been on here for a while. Has anyone mentioned Cob Records in Bangor?
Closed this Summer after about 30 odd years in business. I enjoyed looking through the 2nd hand vinyl there. Some gems to be found.
I think the original Porthmadog shop is still in business though, isn't it?
Its a sad thread is this one.

Report from That Newcastle:

Double bad news is it:

Beatdown Dance music version in Ridley Place has shut down and turned into a Turkish cafe.

Steel Wheels was empty, all stripped out, no counter, no stock, no fit out, sign up To Let.

Reflex was still going, with new and old vinyl, but the amount of Donk was vastly reduced. The RSA advised that the bottom has fallen out of the Donk market, all the Donk fans moved t downloading there, and he has resorted to putting the Donk back stock in the skip. I managed to find a bag full.

RPM was going on, a bit more s/h vinyl stock, and a few new ones.

Surprising, JG Windows have also branched out into vinyl and record players, and had a wall hanging vertical record deck in the window. Mostly Trad Rock and Std. type re-issues for the 40-50 somethings re-buying the records they got rid of when those plastic CDs came out there.

Will have to try the other Beatdown in due course.

Further update from Newcastle:

Beatdown in Berwick Street has merged with the Beatdown in Ridley Place is it, so the one shop now has multi-genres spanning Hardcore / noise / punk / soul / funk / Bass / Dubstep / Techno / Rock / Pop / Rock / Hip Hop / Others. Go through the passage round the back for the vinyl, for some reason they keep plastic CDs in the front.

So not so bad after all, and several records were got, including more hard to find Purient vinyl.

DVD of 'Last Shop Standing' was purchased today, I expect to see some familiar doors and long thin shop interiors is it.

Report from That Camden

The Camden branch of Music & Video Exchange has permanently shut down, leaving only Notting Hill, Soho, Greenwich ones going in Town. Just to think, of all the shops in the chain a few years ago.

It was always a good spot to pick up Music Journo's promos and review copies, I got a fair few post rock and minimal techno there.

Still a few others left in Camden, but none with the genre range in MVE.

DS

Confirmed that the stock from Camden RTE has been distributed to Greenwich and Berwick Street is it, so the RSA told me.

Saw that Thurston Moore in Notting Hill RTE today as it happens, but in the Soul & Dance one, not Rock & Pop there.

DS

Notting Hill Record & Tape Exchange as they style the two shops there, aka MVE the Music & Video Exchange, not Rough Trade East Notting Hill, that is RTW or Rough Trade West is it, although it is in Ladbroke Grove really. Thought about going there today, but it takes so long to get to Greenwich I had time expired.

NH RTE - They did have some 8-Tracks in for sale, so I think the Tape part of the name is still valid there.
