New wheels

Stop!

If you’re willing to go down that route, search for a decent aftermarket wheel and tyre specialist and have a chat. They might have some good advice and offers.

BMW dealers will take as much money from you as they can, and in my limited experience mess it up too. And probably leave you with a similar, vulnerable set up.

I don't really want barry boy looking wheels and am really concerned by the sheer amounts of second hand wheels for sale, they are all going to be dodgy AF lets be honest, why would anyone just randomly sell perfectly good wheels? Its like buying a drill or an iron from a carbooty, 'yeah it works fine mate', 'why are you selling it then?'

Lots of people change their wheels all the time, usually because they want more bling. The smaller, less fashionable wheel / tyre sets can often be had very cheaply because many don’t have the room to keep them. I’ve bought several sets over the years, all perfect.

Op, just do what you want and let us know how it goes. If you buy the same size wheels and tyres, I’ll set my timer!

This is all too complicated, I think I am just going to bend over at BMW

It really isn't!

If you think sourcing a few replacement wheels is complicated, you shouldn't be driving!

Put a picture up of which wheels you have; or use that website I sent you (unless you burst unto flames with it not being a 'UK' website) and find them on there!

Are you for real?! o_O

Buy replacement wheels from eBay resellers with solid feedback; try Quarry Motors, a tried and trusted breaker of BMW cars!

thank you I will check them out.

I love you guys but I asked for help and instead got berated for having run flats!

No; a lot of us just don't like them

It's your call whether you run them or not; but the issue is, is that's why alloys crack, due to RFTs!

Great idea; but shit in real life

Yup; but a decent tyre inflator kit and breakdown cover and you're just as good...

I'll not run RFTs no matter which car; they're shite IMO
Does a can of goo and a compressor work well enough then, in the real world and once every 5 years of so when you need to get off the hard shoulder? I've never had the pleasure, I've always had some sort of spare.

Two people I know have suffered complete failure of a runflat. Hit a pothole, and the impact was so high that a large chunk of tyre came away, leaving the cars undriveable. Rescue needed, plus full price paid for the replacement tyres. So you need to balance that against how effective other solutions are.

Similar to my parents, en route for the airport, too far to carry on regardless, fortunately punctured near home and able to find a local tyre place who had stock and didn't savage them too badly on price.

@garyi , I'm a bit late to the party here but have extensive knowledge of your issues. Firstly ignore the runflat comments, if you're happy with them then move on as they're really not the big issue some people make them out to be. Secondly Merc and BMW have a history with easy to damage OEM alloys that other manufacturers such as Porsche just don't have. Make of that what you will. In your situation I would be looking to either:

source two replacements second hand. What I do when I buy like this is always buy from a company and have them take proper images of both sides of the wheel and ask them to run the wheel on a balancer and check for any buckling. Get them to email this info and tell them if they prove to be unusable you will want a full refund. the reputable ones will have no issue doing this.

OR

find 4 aftermarket wheels second-hand preferably, but be careful. Stick to decent well know brands such as BBS, Ronal and the likes as cheaper wheels could be as bad if not worse than your OEMs. The recognised brands will be forged alloys and much stronger. If you don't recognise a brand do a bit of Googling and the car forums will reveal all. BBS and the likes are expensive new (although not as much as the OEM) hence why I suggest second-hand. What you need to check here is that the wheel size and width but also the offset... this is crucial. The offset is the distance from a wheel's hub mounting surface to the centreline of the wheel. See this diagram:

wheel-offset.jpg

You will need the offset of your current wheels which are stamped on the back or can be gleaned from the specific model on this database:

BMW OEM Wheels

If you get a set of wheels where the offset is massively different you will get handling issues and possible rubbing of the wheels on the arches.

As an illustration of what I am saying I had a lovely SL55 AMG and put the expensive split rim OEM AMG alloys on it (£3K for a set - secondhand). Bent two irreparably in 12 months. Replaced with BBS forged CH-Rs - were still on when I sold the car 7 years later and in perfect condition.

Feel free to PM me if you want any further specific help.

I’ll upload a picture when I am home but the numbers I put at the top

They're just tyre sizes...

You need to put pics up of one of the wheels so we can suss their 'Style'

For example; these are my BMW Style 400s, which I have winter tyres fitted to:
