New wheels

Well, I am not sure if I can sue the government but two of my wheels are now damaged beyond repair thanks to cavernous pot holes and totally missing sides of roads. Its a 2015 BMW 3 series.

Has anyone any experience buying replacements? I could of course bend over at BMW, but am willing to bet I am looking at north of 1600 quid and I just cannot afford that currently.

I am always happy to consider second hand but cannot help but feel why would they even be up for sale unless they two are knackered beyond repair?

I have no idea how to determine size but the tyres say 255/40R18 95Y. DOT 7GJY N8V 4520!

Any other thoughts, after market ones (which I guess would mean doing all 4)

The tyres are all relatively new so I don't want to change size persay

There will be loads of wheels available at breakers.

There's a specialist BMW breakers near me in Sheffield that I've used in the past and found them very helpful.

^This.

Go for 17s to give you a fighting chance of surviving future encounters, but don't forget to tell the insurance company.

However, as @Tony L states, accompany this with photos (wheels and potholes) and stiff letters to the council with a bill for new wheels. Complain to local press if the Council are a bit tardy; they like that sort of thing.

Can you go smaller on rim size (which will still clear the calipers)? The smaller the wheel size the better IMHO and a change to 17’s or even 16’s if you can fit them would transform the ride comfort and ability to deal with bad roads. There will be loads of sets for sale on eBay etc, often from misguided folks moving to bigger wheels for the bling!

I guess changing the wheel size means binning these tyres which are run flats and not cheap ones. It would kill me to do that.

If I took photos of all the pot holes round here, I would have a full time job on my hands. I don't think any amount of complaining is going to help, Andover council, like the rest of the country is no doubt out of money. Still at least Richie Rich has nice shoes.

I walked past an X3 this morning with a rear rim on the ground. Tyre completely shredded, looks like they limped it home and probably screwed the (very large…) wheel as well. It’s ridiculous, totally unsuitable in the real world.

our council payout for damaged wheels. You do need photos. My neighbour got paid out for two damaged wheels - he took photos with a tape measure to show the size including depth of the hole that damaged the drivers side front and back

Lack of maintenance on our toads is pretty shocking really, I’ve noticed the surfaces getting worse over the last five years since I got my latest m/c.

Of course you should go after councils where possible, the pressure may encourage them to get their fingers our but I suspect they’ll have there hands tied by government.

Of course you are likely more susceptible to damage with a large dia wheel, wide low profile tyre and a run flat design. Great for performance but not for impacts in fact I’ve seen a few reports on damage caused by this combination and BMW drivers are up there as the top victims!

I have no doubt on the council thing, however, in reality my life is too short. I just need a solution to the immediate problem. I will see what local breakers have

I'm not suggesting a one-man crusade :)-)), just the one(s) you think damaged your wheel(s)

Follow the link @Bob McC posted, they generally pay. £250 for a wheel is chump change for a council.

It's happening all over.
Good friend had similar on Friday going home from Shrewsbury.
Hit a pothole doing 40ish, now needs front wheel / tyre/ steering rack / rod ends, full suspension check and front end alignment / front subframe has moved on mountings, may need replacing..
That was in a volvo, and been quoted 5K+
He was lucky, lady following had the entire front offside ripped out, suspension, wheel etc, on the side of the road.
Now he knows he is about to try and claim.

With regard to wheels - I have used these twice and found them excellent.
There are plenty of breakers / second hand, but if you want new, these are well worth checking.

For the 2015 3 series saloon - https://www.alloywheelsdirect.net/b...30_alloys/f/18/all/auto/all/all/all/price_asc

they come up as a set of 4, but you can buy less or more, add tyres / bolts / TPMS etc.

Definitely worth reporting and trying to claim IMO. I obviously view this from a cycling perspective and potholes are just so dangerous to the extent I’ve pretty much given up road cycling now (I far prefer canal paths for recreational cycling). So often you are confronted by a big hole in front that was previously invsible due to other traffic and have a split second to decide whether to plough through, jump, or swerve. All options have considerable risks, especially given just how little room some cars give bikes.

Sell the old wheels and tyres on ebay or px them at the breakers. Run flats are awful.

ALL F3x alloys are here Gary:

https://www.auto-treff.com/wcf/index.php?tagged/3480-f30/&objectType=com.woltlab.wcf.article

Pick your wheels from the pics and the alloys are those; for instance I've Style 400s on our F31 touring: https://www.auto-treff.com/wcf/index.php?article/399-styling-400/

You'll have staggered wheels, so 18x8 fronts and 18x8.5 rears by the looks of your tyre sizes you've mentioned

Find those wheels and look to buy 2 via eBay and get them refurbished etc

Bin the RFTs too ;)

I've got a set of OEM BMW 18s on their way to me and I'm fitting them with non RFT Goodyear Assym 6s when they land; RFTs (unless you do huge motorway miles) are shite IMO

I do a lot of motorway miles. I am not a car enthusiast, I have never had issue with run flats, thanks for the link will check it out!

Actually I would rather stick with English websites but thanks I guess!
