My new car (Warning: Porsche content)

Yup, both the IMS and bore score issues are solved in the Gen 2s. Which makes them significantly more expensive (and them being newer adds to the price too, of course).

And conversely makes the older cars appear a better buy if you're prepared to take the risk, some say that if you get to 50k without IMS failure you will be ok.
I'm praying that's true!
Also been running a 15W-50 with zddp to avoid the film breakdown that leads to bore score. Worked so far (touching wood a lot).

The Cayman is a lovely car, back to the perfect balance of the 928 / 944 which makes them drive so well and beat GT3 Beetles on the track.

Sorry,
wasn't too clear, we've got an '03 996 which I believe has much the same engine as the first Caymans.
Also a 928 which is why i get a mention in whenever possible, looks like that's on zero depreciation now over the last 20 years.

So ideally a Hartech Gen 1 S or a Gen 2. I don't want the risk of engine issues, I know they are a tad overplayed but even so - also puts off buyers when it comes to sale time.

It's tempting as my Lotus specialist is also Porsche and very good.

Heresy, I know.
But the CaymanS is what the 911 used to be before it got a bit too big. It's just such a good car in every sports car respect.
Enjoy!

I've not driven either but from what a mechanic mate of mine who has said the Cayman took the major 911 flaw, engine too far back behind the rear axle, and created the car the 911 should have been with the mid-engine layout.

Either way your new motor is really sweet!

Ah, nice! (x2)

So, this car has the later stronger engine? Seems good value:

Hmm, gets thinking cap on..

Looks like it - that period could be late Gen 1 or early Gen 2. Its had 5 previous owners, but I'm not sure that matters. Price looks good.

If you're anywhere near these guys I'd keep an eye on their stock. They specialise in Gen 2s, and know a bit about them. As it happens I found mine elsewhere, but they seemed decent chaps.

Yup, I'll be slightly anal about where it gets parked. But, at the same time, it's for weekend trips primarily and needs must. No point in not using it!

Supermarket carparks are the worst ime, I've got an old Suzuki Jimny for dodgy parking areas, probably worth £250 with a good detailing, shoved a set of front pads in plus a quick oil and filter change and it sailed through the MOT this year.

Cheers - I'm in Horsham. It's really a choice between an Evora, a later sc Yota Elise/Exige or a 911/Cayman. Cayman does tick a lot of boxes apart from not soft top and I do have a big Lotus crew for trips/trackdays/runs etc.

Exactly the same as me Jez. My friend has a showroom selling specialist cars and always has 10 or so excellent low mileage Porsche in.
Every time I buy a car I have a real long hard battle with myself, yet always go for Lotus/ Caterham.

Mrs. can't undersand why I don't go for a Cayman or 911 when she looks at what you get price for price. She'd probably be willing to go out in the Porker too.

Maybe next time:rolleyes:

lol - Kenny! Boys and decisions about toys hey? Wife doesn't care what I get, she has her MR2 and I have many brownie points. I though I needed a 2+2 but in reality got lumbered with the kids as a result - that didn't work! So have money burning a hole in my bank acc but not 100% sure what I want. Need to drive a few...

Just for info.

Porsche engine specialist Hartech are trying to gather info on the direct fuel injection engines, as there have been a tiny number of failures. They're trying to not create any fear amongst owners, but obviously the internet could well blow it all out of proportion. All Hartech are trying to do is work out if there's a pattern to the failures so they can advise owners on a course of action. They've stated there won't be enough engine work as a result for them to take any interest.

Tip: don't be alarmed if every now and then there's a puff off oil smoke from the exhaust on start up with a dfi engine. It's acceptable.

Thanks Tony. I guess the reality is that no mechanical components can be utterly bomb-proof, especially in 320HP engines.

I bought from a Porsche specialist who has been around a fair while, and they were happy to put in writing that when I put it in for its 111 point inspection to take up a used car warranty with Porsche (which I have to wait 90 days to do) they'll pay for any remedial work that's thrown up. That said, as part of their offering it's already been though, and passed, that 111 point inspection at Leicester OPC. Hopefully I'll be alright!

So that's the one with the 320bhp sorted engine? Looks great btw.
Yes, the Gen2, which I think came in at 2010 onwards.
320bhp, in sports or sports+ mode is plenty enough for my level of driving. The steering & handling really flatters the average driver, you can feel exactly where you are on the road & control is so intuitive.
I had a new 911 for a day out last year & it is unquestionably a superb car. Just lovely. But it only really felt substantially quicker at speeds well over the legal limit. So luckily, when I returned to my Cayman, I didn't feel " damn, this is a big step down".
I also wonder whether the last of the 6 cylinder Porsche engines will end up holding their value very firmly compared to the new 4 cylinder range somewhat like the air cooled 993/964 models have done compared to 996's?
