My New Car (warning more Porsche content)

If it’s a production 911 there’s no need for a specialist insurer. The required data is available so any insurer can make a decision.

This is true but a specialist insurer doesn't go on stats alone so, along with brokers, they are always worth a punt if your premium is high.

Insurers seem to set out their stall for certain types of customer and car.
There are some bizarre outcomes. I regularly use comparison sites and few a 'direct' ones that are not on the comparison sites, for our straightforward requirements of 2 cars for a professional couple living in a small country town. So how come, no matter how how slice it, I can never get a quote from LV?- who are usually quoted as a 'good' insurer to use. It has happened about 3 times now. Weird.

I usually end up back at Direct Line, although every few years I have to move away and then come back when they give a better offer.

The whole insurance market looks broken from my perspective. The endless chasing of new business with attractive premiums, to attempt to clobber you later, so you shift to another and so the cycle goes around again. It is time consuming but kind of fine for me who is internet connected etc. But older drivers like my mother are not internet connected - I'll bet many are being well ripped off.

I think I used Flux before when I had the (lightly) modified S2000. Interestingly the Flux website clearly directs potential customers to doing business on the phone rather than online. Yesterday when we spoke, they asked alot of questions about my previous car ownership history, whether I had driven extensively in cars that are of a similar power and type of the 911. They were also interested in whether I had been on any Porsche driver experience days (which I have - two actually).

When I asked about this approach, they openly said they were trying to develop a picture of me as a driver, and ascertain my experience in this type of car.

Out of interest, I tried Flux for a quote for a BMW 640d. Best I could get on comparison sites was £640. They could only get premiums > £1k.

So, my advice in my situation is a bit s**t. :p YM, however, MV.

It is a weird business. Someone I know suggested Saga but they quoted £1400. I almost begin to believe that the crazy high quotes, are a means of saying "we do not really want to insure your risk".........

I dont know if my Flux quote included a new customer discount. They always ask, what the best quote i'd had to date......

Make sure you are comparing like with like, same excess, breakdown or other aspects. Also, if you take the car abroad for example, make sure you know if you have to pay additional premium for each trip to cover the 'comprehensive' element.

There is an amount of discretion involved if they get to know you. A cousin was quoted £2k for his Cossie Sierra, when he complained to someone who knows how he drives the premium halved.

it's great, the noise it makes leaves us grinning. Almost makes the Burmester stereo seem superfluous when you have that noise behind you.

Only small annoyance is the faint whiff of fags, the previous owner must have been a smoker

We had a longish drive out on Friday. Would've done the same on Saturday had we not had to be in central London.

Have you found any tunnels/motorway underpasses/narrow streets yet? :)

My faves were under the A14 near Bury St Ed’s and under the M11 near Newport, Saffron Walden. Still brought a lump to my throat after two years!

There's a short tunnel on the a505 between the A1M and Baldock that you could try. Short enough that you could loop back and try it a few times.
The dealership recommended it when I test drove an X5M...

Naa. Did that tunnel a few times in ours, and unless you can slow to a crawl to then accelerate hard, it’s just too high, wide and fast. (In my opinion)
