Coronavirus - the new strain XVIII

Another row seems to have broken out among the Tories this morning. The Mail is reporting that Johnson raged about the third lockdown. No wonder he's kicking the mere thought of an inquiry into touch...

"[Johnson] agreed to fresh restrictions but his frustration is said to have boiled over after the crucial meeting at No 10 in October. ‘No more ****ing lockdowns – let the bodies pile high in their thousands!’ he is alleged to have raged."

Like so much else about right wing coverage of Johnson it’s impossible to tell whether this is an attack or a PR stunt. Lots of DM readers will be happy to hear this now they’re vaccinated, and Tory backers will be reassured.

I don’t really wish to. I just treat all such claims with extreme scepticism, based on past actions, and assume we won’t ever get the real picture.

Very little sympathy for the rank and file feeling hard done by by their bosses, have to say. Only a matter of weeks since they were enthusiastically brutalising women on the order of those bosses and now they’re asking for solidarity? Pffft.

Duly noted. A healthy scepticism for media reporting all sides of any such incident is not a bad stance to start from. Ensures objectivity.

Whatever has or has not happened during this pandemic.. it remains true that Cummings is a self opinionated freak with serious anti democratic views, and Johnson is a habitual liar with psychopathic tendencies includiing zero empathy for anyone but himself.
Leopards.. spots..etc.

SNP calls for Johnson's resignation

"These comments are utterly abhorrent. If they are true, Boris Johnson has a duty to resign. The prime minister must now come to parliament to give a statement, and face questioning, on these shocking claims and the growing Tory sleaze scandal engulfing Westminster."

I mean, this is just insane. The DM appears to have found a new Enemy of The People and it’s the Prime Minister of Britain. 127,000 bodies to be specific.

It recalls his remark to ventilator company bosses-“ lets call it Operation Last Gasp”.

I just wondered what you make of the latest ONS findings about self isolation - the high level of compliance generally and this

  • The deprivation level of a respondent's home address had no significant impact on their understanding of self-isolation guidance, full adherence to the guidance, and having no contact with non-household members, when comparing respondents in this survey and respondents living in deprived areas who were surveyed between 15 March and 20 March 2021.

Self isolation?
I have a builder do some essential repairs to the outside of my house. He hasn't come in, he knows I'm being careful.
But in a brief chat earlier this morning he told me how he believed he had Covid in the autumn. He described the symptoms and the breathlessness.
"Never felt so ill"
So I remarked that he must of been off work for sometime if he was as Ill as he described. Er no. "You know me, like a machine, I'm at work no matter what."
In and out of peoples houses.
Some here will say that the messaging is wrong, that he doesn't have the support to be off work (he's definately not hard up).
Or he may just not care.
I haven't given him a key.

I'm assuming the degree is compliance is self-reported? In which case perhaps respondents from deprived areas are equally sheepish about admitting to non-compliance?

Just skimmed it and there doesn't seem to be a detailed account of methodology but I'd suspect major selection bias:

"The data presented in this bulletin were collected from individuals ("contacts") who had been identified as a contact of someone who had tested positive for COVID-19."

Identified how? Oh:

"Half (50%) of all respondents had downloaded the NHS Test and Trace app. Of those, 48% received a notification by the app telling them to self-isolate."

I'd like to know about the other 50%, but really. You don't download the app if you know that your work commitments are going to prevent you from complying with an instruction to isolate in a way that criminalises you. Suspect you don't take part in a survey like this either.

On the face of it this is a terrible study! Scope and methodology really needs to be accounted for. I hope this kind of thing isn't informing policy.

A small point, but I don’t think there’s a legal requirement to comply with advice to isolate from the app.

I wonder if there’s a war on, and so the famous Blitz spirit is revealing itself. Self sacrifice for the nation.

Well, there's a legal requirement to self-isolate if you've been in close contact with someone who has Covid, and the app tells you and Some Authority that you've been in close contact with someone who has Covid, so...

This came up before and as far as I recall there’s a legal requirement to self isolate if and only if you’ve been instructed to by a real human being from NHS Test and Trace. But as always I could be wrong. A brief google turned up this at the top of the page

isolation recommendations from the NHS COVID-19 app (in contrast to those from the Test and Trace Service) are not currently legally enforceable.

All I can say is this is not my experience and I’m here literally all the time.

Went into Lewisham today - first time in a any big shops for a while. TK Maxx about a quarter not wearing a mask. Of those that were lots of noses on display. M&S most people wearing a mask but the odd one or two with it round their chin. Left a couple of smaller shops because I felt uncomfortable. Happily the charity shops were mostly fine!

My advise - shop where the old people go :)

We're planning a visit to the shops on Friday, but I'm quite prepared to turn around and head home if we feel uncomfortable. With any luck, I'll get to go to a record shop and I do look forward to that!

I watched C4 news this evening and the situation in India is really sad and scary too.

I’d putit on TK Maxx’s Twitter account. Tell them you left without buying anything because so many of their customers weren’t wearing masks. They have the right to ask people to leave their premises.
Personally, I feel a lot less concerned due to being vaccinated and because the prevalence where I live is so very low. I still wear a mask, sanitise my hands and respect other people’s space though

"All 85,000-plus Covid fines issued in England during the pandemic should be reviewed, MPs and peers have said, after more than a quarter of prosecutions in the first two months of the year for breaching the regulations [which have been changed at least 65 times since March last year] were shown to have been wrongly brought."

"The committee also says it is “astonishing” that every single criminal charge brought under the Coronavirus Act has been found to have been brought incorrectly."
