Classic British Modern & Free Jazz Recommendations

Vaguely on thread as I'm going to see Stewart Lee tomorrow night :D

I’m burning all my CDs so rediscovering this classic from previous reissue era

The new Binker & Golding album Feeding The Machine really is excellent, likely my favourite so far. More in the way of loops and ambience than before and a really good recording as one would expect from Gearbox. I pre-ordered the numbered limited ‘eco recycled vinyl’ version from Bandcamp months ago, which thankfully sounds fine. Bet the black is even better!

Meanwhile, Universal/Dacca continue to delay new releases, but Universal are slipping out classic titles on licence:

I can't find mention of which tape was used - and I have an original Decca copy - but I do hope it sounds good, and that other 60s releases will follow.

Also, from MPS in Germany, more classic re-releases (some British):

I have the MPS 2021 reissue of Dexter Gordon - ‘A Day in Copenhagen’ and that does sound pretty good. That says remastered from the original master tapes by Dirk Sommer and has a picture of the tape box included, but it does not actually say AAA.

I don’t have it, but The MPS Oscar Peterson - ‘Exclusively For My Friends’ Box Set has been around for sometime as it was released in 2014 and it does seem a good buy as you can get it for around £144 for 6 disks. That does say:
“The AAA pressing of the complete audiophile edition is carried out on 180 gram virgin vinyl. The sound of the original master-tapes was carefully optimized in a pure analog mastering process to free them from their traces of ageing. As a result MPS succeeds in meeting the highest audiophile standard found today”.

As long as the final sound quality is good I am less bothered if AAA or not these, days. The bigger problem with so many good releases and reissues recently is showing some restraint both for financial and space reasons.

Edit £114 not £144 as above.

While it is good news there is no mention if the two vinyl ones by Otoroku will be mastered from an analogue tape source. It is likely they were recorded that way, at least the 1976 one. I expect though they will be from the digital source for the CD’s or even a CD itself, so down to the quality of the mastering as to how good they will be.

I would be extremely surprised if an analog tape were used for these pressings Jim. As you say, it then comes down to the quality of the mastering.

An interesting unreleased Amancio D’Siva session from 1983, Sapana. Blissed out with some great playing and guitar tones, much closer to Cosmic Eye than Integration. Haven’t a clue how it was mastered or what the quality of the vinyl is like, but it’s available to order and sample on Bandcamp and stream in HD on Qobuz. Nice artwork:

More on Amancio D’Silva by LJC today:

I bought the Pheon reissue of Integration when it was released and eventually gave it away. To me it sounded flat and lacklustre, I think the Impressed CD gets closer to the energy of the original. Brilliant music. Let’s hope a proper analogue remastering sees the light of day, the message from Tony Higgins in responses sounds hopeful.
