Derek Bailey at home playing along to pirate jungle stations. Just wonderful.

Great stuff. I remember this from the time, and as the blurb states two tracks appeared on David Toop's Ocean of Sound compilation - which is well worth seeking out in itself. As ever with DB there is a great sense of playfulness and humour - ditto his 'chats' series. John Zorn organised an Avant session for Derek to do this properly with DJ Ninj, but it was never as good as these home sessions.

Theo,
Thanks. Don’t understand why it had sold out under it when I looked early this morning especially as it did say releases 12 August and 500 copies? I went from Home Page, but that works as well now??

New Str4ta album announced (Ohcre). Giles Patterson’s jazz funk project. I got in early with their first album ‘Aspects’ and grabbed the Bandcamp DIY white label version which not only is a great album I’ve played a lot, but has proven a very good investment. I’ve done the same here which is even more limited at 100 copies even though £50 is really going some for me for a new record. Again I suspect it will be a good punt, plus a nice thing to have. If it is as good as the first one I’ll be happy. This one features the ever wonderful Emma Jean Thackray on some tracks too, and that has to be a win.

I hope there's more: I really wanted the Mike Taylor albums to see the light of day.

Me too. Alan Skidmore's Once Upon a Time high on my list too.

Looking forward to Flare Up. Nice album, although I notice they are getting a bit pricey.

I have just seen what someone is trying to get for the only original on Discogs of ‘Flare Up’. VG and no cover. Perhaps I should sell my Phillips mint original now before the reissue crashes the price!

I see someone as already listed one in the Classifieds.

Once Upon A Time I would be in for. I also like a couple of the ones with Tony Oxley, but those are not on Decca.

A never before released in full Don Rendell, Ian Carr Quintet recording is due out on CD on 23rd December. ‘Warm Up - The Complete Live At The Highwayman 1965’ restored from one of the tapes Trevor Tomkins gave to Jazz in Britain in 2021. Obliviously required quite a bit of restoration and therefore digital, but the long track ‘Promises’ available to stream now sounds pretty good to me. As it says up close and personal in the pub with a great atmosphere and I like how a lot of the playing here is full of humour, at least on this track. Don Rendell verbally encouraging the band members to push further in their solos. If you have all the other Quintet albums then you will have heard a lot of their own compositions, but there are some standards as well. Seems worth having:

If you missed either ‘Dusk Fire’ or ‘Shades Of Blue’ when Jazzman reissued them (these two sold out quickly twice) they are now back in stock.

I couldn't think of a more suitable place to share this:

Thanks Jim - I'd missed this. Now on order :)

The next two Decca British Jazz Explosion LPs are hitting the shops.

Just ordered Flare Up by Harry Beckett. A bit pricey:

Not as pricey as an original has escalated to. I was surprised to see generally over £250 now with someone in Brazil on Discogs trying to get £700+ for a VG+.
I still have mine I bought new in 1970 (and still) NM for about £2.50 (just pre decimalisation). Actually that was expensive then, £2.50 is now £31.50 according to the UK inflation calculator. So the reissue price hasn’t gone up that much Graham. ;)

If had any sense though (I don’t) I probably should have sold my OG prior to the reissue being released. :D

Jazz in Britain currently have the Splinters triple CD and hardback book reduced to £10.
