Any recommendations for nice female vocals please?

Give Angus and Julia Stone a listen, she has an excellent voice.

Isobel Cambell might be worth a try. I have onlly heard "Ballad of the Broken Seas" that she did with Mark Lanagen - not sure his vocal can be classified as "nice" mind. She was of course part of Belle & Sebastian and has some solo stuff too, but never got round to exploring further myself.

Van Lear Rose - Loretta Lynn (2004)

Wonderful album lovingly produced and arranged (and largely played) by Jack White.

Country with none of the grit removed.

One of my favourite female performers of recent years is Nina Nastasia. Not sure she aligns with the OP's stated preferences, though. Kinda like PJ Harvey for hardcore misanthropes.

Try Francoise Hardy (eg "If You Listen"), Jane Monheit or for really dreamy vocal style (albeit mixed with a male vocal), try Slowdive (eg LP "Just For A Day")

Want to scare the neighbours with a female voice? - try anything by the Babes In Toyland

I'll chime in with my usual recommendations:

Sam Phillips – Fan Dance (w/ Marc Ribot on guitar)

Over The Rhine – Films for Radio (start there)

Jesca Hoop – Kismet and/or Murder of Birds

I'm in to stuff like Florence + the Machine, Sia, Emeli Sande, Amy Winehouse, Duffy, Diana Krall and I was wondering if there's anything out there a little of the beaten track that I'm missing?

Given that list, Susan Tedeschi probably merits a mention as well.

These would all be coming to my Desert Island. Until you've investigated all the stuff that's stood the test of time why bother with anything new ?

wow, good thread. there were a couple i was going to mention but i'd just be repeating what's gone before. i'll be perusing quite a few mentions here myself :)

Rumer - v - Karen Carpenter? No contest, Karen had emotion that the otherwise impressive Rumer singularly lacks.

5 pages and no mention of Sarah McLachlan????

Fully agree with the earlier choice of Karine Polwart as much under-rated, so here's a sample

And also (depending on your age and musical preferences) Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders

And there's more .......
