‘Great’ Albums that you’ve never listened to?

I prefer to listen to music I like rather than music people tell me I should like.

Now I'm off to listen to lots of Sankt Otten.

not bothered what i have missed, music appreciation is a journey, some you miss and may latch onto later, whatever. no point busting a gut, i did that with jazz, you just find what u like, missed sumfing so what, as they say

On a whim I dug up a list of ‘best albums of the 21st century’ as I thought I would probably never have heard a lot of those. I was right - ninety out of 100 in fact.

https://www.theguardian.com/music/2019/sep/13/100-best-albums-of-the-21st-century

(and a couple of those that I do know were released in 2000, so don’t strictly qualify!)
I have mildly surprised myself by having heard 28 of those. They also chose the wrong Jens Lekman album and omitted QOTSA's Songs for the Deaf.

My Rick Wakeman story... I grew up near Heathrow and in 1973 (I think) was with a bunch of mates driving around late at night, as you do. Well after midnight we were going along a quiet road near the airport fence and came across a Rolls-Royce perched on top of a small roundabout, with a very recognisable figure with long blonde hair sitting next to it. Naturally we stopped and asked if he was OK, and offered to help push the Roller back on the road. He declined the help and said "You chaps better f off before the coppers get here", so we did. I certainly didn't want any nosy copper searching my pockets

Cool story. Nice one.

But going back to Great albums you've never listened to, how about Don Mclean - American Pie? One of the biggest selling albums of all time.

I've never heard it.

Pet Sounds or any LP by the Beach Boys come to think of it.
White Album, Revolver, actually the only Beatles LP I have heard is Sgt. Pepper.
Many others I am sure.

Never listened to "What's Going On", anything by Abba nor any Ian Dury and the Blockheads albums (apart from a best of).

As an aside, it is quite unbelievable how unfamiliar people are with The Beatles oeuvre. Yes, they know some of the singles but are ignorant of key album tracks. How many people know ‘Things we said today’ for example or side two of Abbey Road?

Mull, I wish I had never listened to Dark Side of the Moon. In my opinion a candidate for most overrated album of all time.

I wouldn't know...;)

Well that's just batty!

I've never heard a Police album. But, did they make a great album?

I'm biased because I can't stand Sting. Pretentious git. Fake voice.

As for that 21st C albums list. I've heard of a few. We have Back to Black in the house but I've never heard it. I have 'Born To Die' and like it a bit.

For those who have never listened to an Elton John album. This is the only one I possess and I think it is rather good. The lyrics to 'Your Song' are wondrous. I lost interest whhen he went all 'glam'. The last three tracks on this link are unfamiliar, so probably 'CD Bonus Tracks.' Fill 'yer boots.

Pet Sounds or any LP by the Beach Boys come to think of it.

Blimey!!

I'm a child of the 60s. I was 16 in 1965. Slap in the middle of it all., so you'd expect me to know the Beatles.

But whatever your age it's almost negligent to not be at least vagueley familiar with the Beatles/Stones/Beach Boys and the other major bands of the period. But the thing is, I'm also not ignorant of what went before them, from the 50s Rock and Roll, Doo-Wop etc,..to the stuff before that, such as vocal groups like the Ink Spots and Mills Bros, the swing bands of Miller, the Dorseys etc. great band singers such as Helen Forrest, Edythe Wright, Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington, Keely Smith and the earlier jazz stuff by Armstrong, Ellington, etc. This is all great music.
Don't waste it!!

Coming from ABBA-Björns hometown Västervik I never listened to an ABBA album. I've heard enough to knew I don't want to.

and thrice nay. Obviously heard tracks and singles on the radio and stuff but not an album, couldn't name one!

Edit: RE Beatles, nothing pre Rubber Soul interests me, but post that yes pretty much everything.

The way I listen isn't conducive to only knowing one or two tracks as I only play full albums start to finish, so I know 'side two' of everything I own.
