    Improving PC streaming

To OP: As you are already using a PCI soundcard, presumeably your PC can accomodate a card from these guys: www.cantatis.co.uk I currently own one and for what it's worth, it is by far and away, hands down the best digital audio source I've ever owned.

A guide to building a better computer

I wish I'd spotted this thread sooner but nevermind. FWIW, the card these guys produce will turn just about any PC with a PCI slot into a "tip top replay monster"; www.cantatis.co.uk In all seriousness my (really, super cheapo) PC will take the Pepsi Challenge with just about anything short of...

Cantatis Overture 192 - PC audio fans take note!

Hi everyone, I wouldn't normally do a "wow you've gotta try one o' these" thread but if you are into computer audio, in all seriousness, wow you've gotta try one o' these! It's a PCI soundcard from small UK manufacturer called Cantatis...

    First dip into PC music.

An M-Audio 2496 would imo be the perfect starting place for PC audio. Get yourself a cheap one on ebay and you'll be set :)

    Ouch, Don't upset the wife!

Are you saying it's women who drive these men to be serial killers? If not I think that might offer a reasonable explanation!

How have others kept their music habit alive while also having kids?

I'm not sure your problem is really for audio forums but perhaps more for marriage guidance!! In all seriousness though, your time is very, very important and a new child in the family can often mean having to defend it. My best advice is don't be "aggro" about it but if you want to enjoy your...

'Twisted light' carries 2.5 terabits of data per second

Woah thanks for the responses - hi everyone. granham-r - My original point was just that decoding FLAC introduces audible latency, which it does, that and when mixing/performing/recording that might cause issue for people. But on a side note I absolutely agree that the outputs from a decoded...

How have others kept their music habit alive while also having kids?

Indeed I got rid of the floorstanders and replaced with some near-fields that I wall-mounted and positioned for "my" chair, hehe. The amp etc was placed at a sensible height away from prying fingers and, touch wood, there have been zero problems :)

    IXOS Speaker Cable

If you want to go the "official" route then by all means go for NACA5 but in sonic terms you'll do no better than Cambridge Audio 400 strand. Sorry if you were getting all excited about spending lots of money on cables :P

'Twisted light' carries 2.5 terabits of data per second

Decoding FLAC takes time and hence introduces latency. In particular circumstances this really does mean that WAV "sound better" than FLAC. If you are building a stand-alone device specifically for replay, there are far mroe technical hurdles to overcome in getting a decent sound out of FLAC...

Reccomendation for a good value second hand power amplifier.

If you're generally liking the NAD sound then an NAD or perhaps Rotel power amp would be a good choice.

    Arcam rDac

I bought an rDac and a Dacmagic with the intention of keeping just one. It didn't take long to pick the Dacmagic. The rdac was OK but even the USB input on the Dacmagic was just plainly a better prouct - even when comparing the USB inputs. I couldn't believe the Dacmagic was 80 quid cheaper...

Yiiiiiihaaa!!! The 20'000 UKP power cable is here!

FLAC takes time to decode whereas WAV can be taken straight off the hard disk and given to the soundcard. Long story short, WAV can be played with a much smaller buffer, meaning lower latency. Very, very important in some production/monitoring situations :P
