West Indies in England 2017

God is a Yorkshireman and Sir Geoffrey is his prophet on this earth. And just like most Christians ignore all that stuff in Leviticus about making slaves of your children, stoning people to death and men lying with other men not being kosher - we Yorkshirmen accept that as a mere man of flesh and blood our prophet is fallible. In this case he is clearly wrong. But he batted many hours in order to forgive the sins of those who played lose shots outside off stump, and dragged out otherwise exciting games to be deathly dull draws. Like all religions - it should be very, very boring. And so we forgive Geoffrey and would ask that he be given time to reflect on the error of his ways. And probably give quite a lot of money to these guys...

...as should we all.

Nice to see the Windies get back in amongst the wickets. England 2,3,5 problem now further demonstrated when 1, and 7+ do not fire as well.

Might be an enjoyable series after all. We'll see if the WI can post a lead tomorrow...

windies were certainly a different bowling attack this time and really hit home the fragility of the top order . Quite often one of your openers will go cheaply as bowlers are on fire for the first overs with the new ball and 235 are very important to a good score ,cook and root cannot be expected to carry the team every match so we desparately neeed some opening batsman but they seem to have tried everyone !

Excellent batting performance from about half of the WI order. Eight down now, but they might get a 200 lead here - which would allow England to have a go at demonstrating resilience.

I think they should drop Graeme Swann. Surely the worst commentator on the TMS team.

I'd rather get rid of Charles Dagnall. TMS is the estranged love child of Radio 3 and 4. Since it has been associated with the rather beastly Radio 5 there has been a definite lowering of standards. Although originally a cricketer, Dagnall has come through the route of drive time local radio. And his delivery is clearly infected with Smashey and Nicey crassness.

I understand Dagnall was originally a T20 commentator. If left there that would be fine as no decent chap would embrace such a monstrosity and so he would not be encountered.

The online cricket text updates have fairer worse in the modern day. They are irritating glib. They are often typed by "sports generalists" who have little appreciation for the nuances of test cricket, having learnt their trade in ghastly communion with such abominations as association football, darts and dogging - or whatever the hoi polloi find amusement in nowadays.

I just stick the scorecard up.

Additionally - the online text is spattered with the "tweets" from the general public. One assumes that this can only be to show the idiocy of the reporters to be in stark contrast with the supreme and contemptible idiocy of the population at large.

Swan's matey noises and impressions are a little wearing. But on the whole are a secondary symptom of a much larger malaise that should be dealt with at source.

It's part of the BBC's continued infatuation with 'inclusivity'. We belong to you, so your efforts are obviously as important and professional as ours. Give us your opinions! Show us any old crap from your phones! Tweet us! Please!!! You are all great!

It's an approach that could be extended to the operating theatre or plane cockpit with fascinating results.

I just stick the scorecard up.

Up where?

Superb batting performance, well done West Indies. Grit and patience at the right times a thoroughly deserved win.

England, by their own high bowling standards sent down some very average stuff at times today. It was a position that you should be very pleased to be in, this morning.

Very good windies performance but england were not quite on the money with the bowling and dropped catches loose matches

Hope looks to be a very well organized batsman. After Lara and Chanderpaul, he looks like the first sensible batsman they have produced. High time. Brathwaite also is good, with some startline performances recently (142 and 60*), but Hope is the real deal here. He looks good enough to have got into the 80s teams. But West Indies bowling still quite ordinary, and I couldn't believe England collapsed on the first day. Overall, a very interesting match, but dropped catches brought down the standard and means that this match can't be classified as an all time classic. But nicely set up for the final test now.

wwe only played with 8 , 3 players were barely county . it will be white wash in aussie land . bell needs recalling , that's how bad it is

Don't worry. Aussies beaten by Banglis. That is as bad as it can get. Cant imagine anything worse. But England batting is terrible (adjusted for dropped catches by Cook and Stokes - if they drop batsmen who score 50 runs after the life, then they have to score 50 runs more themselves) - no wonder they are struggling. But honestly, does England have any new fast bowlers on the horizon? Why not Chris Jordan? Surely he is better than Woakes.

Maybe with all the press the Windies have been getting lately made the England side think it would be another easy game.

England most of the time looked second rate, maybe they had other things on their minds.

Cook had two below par batting sessions and dropped catches that he would normally have taken and in the second innings the bowlers looked as if they could not be bothered.

They should have keep Toby Roland-Jones, Woakes was not the same as he used to be.

I watched most of the five days, apart from the times when the GP was on, but it was hard going and plain boring at times watching England.

The Windies on the other hand looked very switched on and were a joy to watch both batting and bowling.

After the first Windies innings Root and the others in the decision making process should have taken note that they were up against a different side and never declared on the forth day, he should have made sure the score Windies needed was unreachable in their last innings.

Think the next test England will be out for blood.
