There's a gap..... at the top of my rack..... analogue is done... for now

I still use the tall Quadraspire rack I bought twenty years ago (cant argue that it hs provided value)
I'm an audiophile through and through and the top shelf has always housed my 'credentials' - usually a fancy schmancy turntable such as many PFM members own.
But, things change and now my digital sources via my Soncoz SGD1 dac outperform anything I can afford turntable wise. The VPI turntable just sits there, unused, and I'm bored with dusting it.
So, I'm thinking of putting it away and replacing it with something more retro digital: a vintage CD player I would love a Cambridge Audio CD1 or a Meridian MCD pro ..... but these things are rare and beyond my means.
I would really like an old, tank like cd player... but the knackered transport thing scares the pants off me. I own a Kenwood dp-x9010 that doesnt recognise discs and @Mike P tells me that new lasers are going to be virtually unobtanium...... It's a real shame as the transport is otherwise like silk in its operation.
I dont need to connect the new top shelf item to my DAC necessarily.
So here we are. Uncertain as to the way forward. What would you do at reasonable cost? Any suggestions?

The last thing I would even consider would be vintage digital!! Unreliable and full of unobtainium parts.

i really do not agree - I have loads of it, CDPs and DACs. The biggest issue I ever had was finding a functional replacement for KSS-272a laser unit - took me 3 2nd hand purchases before finding a good one. Nowadays there are threads on DIYA about replacing the actual diodes in the same. Things like laser units for cdm9-pro units are relatively easy with a bit of research. I’d keep away from laserdisc and DAT, but that’s all.

If I have a record player on the top shelf, relegating my CD player to the next shelf, the CD player does not sound as good, by quite a margin.

I've come late to this thread, Darren but do you have a decent enough vinyl collection? If so, you'll need sth to play them on. Maybe your VPI combo wasn't sufficiently optimised if you've relegated it on s.q.,grounds. I can live without digital (apart from valved CDP) but must have vinyl and radio (+TV) through my kit. I've no idea how streaming etcetera works, and I'm happy in my ignorance.:)

That's very interesting Paul. Do you have nay idea what causes it?

Hi Mike,
You are always welcome, late or not.
I have so much music now Mike that the least convenient option (vinyl) just doesn't get used, especially since it isn't as transparent or dynamic as my digital sources. I know it could be improved.... but this would be at a cost.
