The classical what are you listening to now ? thread.

Richard Strauss- something I’ve not heard before ! (BBC looking more like Classic FM. When Classic FM started I remember an Irish host introduce Symphony No.5 by Herbert Von Karajan)

Back to Chailly’s Bologna recording of the Rossini Petite Messe. It sounds like the old boy was writing for his own pleasure when he did this, with nothing to prove. Lovely.

Dunedin: Bach's Christmas Oratorio. To me, really superb.

About to download In Terra Pax. Thanks for that.

Continuing my exploration of the French baroque repertoire: Duphly
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B009LSBX80/?tag=pinkfishmedia-21
Duphly was mid to late 18th century, so Louis XV-era, a successor to Rameau, Couperin and others. To quote Rousset's notes, "Duphly was not an innovator; he revolutionised neither style nor technique, nor did he attempt to impose a personnality. (...) Yet he composed splendidly for the harpsichord.
Very pleasant music, beautifully played by Rousset on a luscious Kroll instrument.

John Adams - Doctor Atomic 2CD opera, I have the DVD but have been waiting a long time for the CD to come out

As usual Adams writes well for the voice parts, the SQ is excellent. It comes in a box with an excellent booklet which includes the libretto

BBC R3 Wagner: Tannhauser Prelude Act 1. Barenboim, Staatskapelle Berlin.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B003YCM19Y/?tag=pinkfishmedia-21

Dramatic decelerations at the end made it sound like a huge flywheel about to stop spinning.
He gets some criticism for his slow tempi with Wagner but I’ve loved his Parsifal and this sounded so go good Ive bagged myself the three disc set on eBay for £6(!) to replace my ancient vinyl Otto Gerdes set-

Which has appalling SQ I might add.

This Podger-Brecon Baroque performance of The Four Seasons. It's The Four Seasons, Jim... and I like it :)

EDIT: I've just finished listening to the whole disc and oh my goodness, this release really is something special: it's bursting with clarity and detail, feels positively feral in places and all the better for it, and most of all, is positively fun from start to finish. This release could easily come with 'Boredom-free or your money back' guarantee as it's 75 minutes of mesmerising magic on just one shiny disc. Recommended!

Vivaldi: Stabat Mater. Andreas Scholl. I’ve long thought him the finest countertenor currently performing but there’s a remarkable proliferation of countertenors now and Ive not heard them as extensively.
