Sad songs

Not sure there's anything sadder than this -:(

Buchanan himself appears to break down at @2min 50 - and it's no wonder.

Two pages of sad songs and no mention of Gram Parsons?
Hickory Wind
Hot Burrito #2
She
Love Hurts
Brass Buttons
$1000 Wedding

My obligatory Grateful Dead reference: China Doll, aka The Suicide Song.

There are so many.. some well known.. others a bit more obscure. Some 'pop' many not.

Beatles. 'Girl' My fave song at the time.

Beatles again. 'Yes It Is'

Beth Neilsen-Chapman. An ode to her dead husband IIRC. Stunning imagery.

And that awesome lyric...

Otis perfection.

Amalia Rodriguez at her best. OMG What a voice!!

And it isn't all new, fab, cool or trendy. This is still stunning after 85 years..

You are absolutely right and I'll second the Gram selection.

The obvious one must be Fa-fa-fa-fa-fa by Otis Redding, shirley?

Atmosphere by Joy Division.

Pretty much anything on Emmylou Harris' Red Dirt Girl, but especially Bang The Drum Slowly or Hour of Gold.

Also pretty much anything on Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds' The Boatman's Call.

Or, while on Cave and The Seeds, from No More Shall We Part, the title track, As I Sat Sadly By Her Side, Love Letter, Sweetheart Come.

Jorma Kaukonen - Genesis.

Most everything off Peter Hammill's Over.

Van Morrison - TB Sheets, Slim Slow Slider.

And on an instrumental note (tee hee), most of Explosions In The Sky's The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place.

I'll stop there...

I love sad songs, so I'll have another go. "Caroline No" is 2 minutes 17 seconds of melancholy perfection.

And today's obligatory Grateful Dead song is "Stella Blue", though I don't generally think of them as a sad song band.

'Things Behind The Sun' by Nick Drake

'Dark Globe' by Syd Barrett

'Man Of The World' by Fleetwood Mac

Gilbert O'Sullivan- 'Alone Again (Naturally)'

The Blue Nile- 'From A Late Night Train'

Paddy McAloon- 'I Trawl The Megaherz' (Most of it)

Glen Campbell- 'By The Time I Get To Phoenix'

This is very bittersweet and prog as well, which is quite unusual.

+1 for Tank Park Salute. Devastating. And the piano work is just beautiful.

Don't wish to be overly maudlin but we very nearly lost our 9 year-old son to a brain infection in 1991 just as Don't Try This At Home came out. I can't hear Tank Park Salute without being reminded of that time and how, in some weird sort of way, I drew comfort from it. I know it's only a song but it means a great deal to me.
