Sad songs

Funny, we love English language sad songs here in France.

I for one find French ones laughable.

How about Ed Sheeran’s Make It Rain?

Do you English people find it laughable?

Vic Chesnutt – Flirted with You All My Life

A sobering song alluding to his attitude toward suicide.
From his album "At the Cut", released on Constellation Records in 2009.

"Oh death, oh death, oh death
Really, I'm not ready
No no
Oh death, oh death, oh death
Clearly, I'm not ready"

A Friend and Nothing More
- Michael Stanley. No idea how I came to buy the album I was a teenage rock fan at the time.

Gillian Welch - Annabelle

From Gillian Welch's debut album "Revival", released on Almo Sounds Records in 1996.
The second track on the record, and the first song that Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings recorded for the album.

The song tells the story of a poor sharecropper reflecting on the death of her young daughter Annabelle.

"We cannot have all things to please us
No matter how we try
Until we've all gone to Jesus
We can only wonder why"

Previously mentioned Hope there's someone , Antony and The Johnsons

and Kentucky Avenue from Tom Waits :

Sinatra A Single Man.
Words by Rod McKuen he wot wrote Seasons in the Sun

My fav Sinatra LP

For me the song that has made me tear up several times is Elephant by Jason Isbell. Scott Walker's Farmer In The City also has great emotional impact.

Sparklehorse - Sad & Beautiful World

Mark Linkous wrote a lot of sad and depressing songs.
This one is from his 1995 debut album "Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot"

"Sometimes days go speeding past
Sometimes this one seems like the last

It's a sad and beautiful world
It's a sad and beautiful world"

Elliott Smith - Between the bars

Just Under two and a half minutes of heartbreak. Everything about his story is pretty sad too.
