Having a play with the Pentax K-1's Pixel Shift resolution mode. Now, unlike the Olympus system, which moves the sensor a fraction of a pixel for each successive shot, the K's moves one whole pixel. This means each single pixel gets a chance at all the colour channels on the filter array. Its effect is subtle - the resolution doesn't increase (remaining at 36MP) but the higher colour fidelity and decrease in noise is very noticeable. Downside is the file size, increasing from around 50MB for a raw file up to around 150MB.

Off to the Lakes on a walking/photo holiday later this year and cannot wait to try this out. The Pentax weather sealing means the weather can do what it likes. :)

Thats neat, but to work to best effect both the camera and subject must be dead still any movement between image acquisitions of the pixel shift routine will soften the image and potentially corrupt colours.

The colour rendition should be excellent as each pixel should be getting a true RGB value rather than an interpolated one.

Absolutely - the K-1 MkII has an uprated pixel-shift system (I dare say similar to the Olympus HHHR function) which does allow for slight subject movement. What's also useful is that the K cameras have an automatic mirror-up function which operates whenever the self-timer is used. The mirror pops up about 0.5 sec before the shutter fires.
