Yes good work there, solid progress.

I'm going going backwards at a fair old rate of knots, mainly due to sitting around all day eating out of boredom. The only good thing about eventually going back to work is that I'll not be able to empty the fridge all day.

@matt j , I am lucky enough to be quite busy, but see the problem many are having with filling their days without filling their boots. I hope you’re busy again soon enough.

Really well done!

What resistance level are you using on the rower? I’m sticking to 3, but I was told 6 most replicates being on the water and anything above is for short term bursts and the super-strong. I also get sick of rowing, so I’m working on my lifestyle with a lot more cycling for daily exercise and walking to the shops rather than going in the car. Are you able to do any of these things? Calories consumed is the big one though!

Thanks.

I’m walking more than rowing at the moment as it’s been so nice out, and we’re lucky enough to live close enough to the seafront for our hour’s walk to be partly along that front. We’re also finding folk round here are taking distancing seriously, using the paths, beach and grass to keep at least 2m distance while passing. Most days this last week I’ve been managing 3 miles daily.

When rowing I use around 4 on the resistance. Note that if you use the “ErgData” app it will show the actual resistance value so you can calibrate from machine to machine. I aim for 110.

Whatever, it’s important to note that the PM5 device compensates for the drag factor in calculating your efforts and pace. You just choose to simulate a sleek scull at the lower drag levels, or a big heavy sea rower at the other!

I really enjoy the rower, and will be linking up my PC again to run the RowPro software. Worth a look as you have a Concept2.

A mix of walking and rowing (and cycling!) will likely be good for general health and long term sustainability.

Fantastic - cheering you on.

Good work WB,

Did anyone mention Ketosis?

Look it up

You'll not burn your fat unless you are in it, so cut right down on all your carbs.

My own strict fitness regime is certainly being challenged by lockdown

My understanding (from fitness vids and books - I'm not a doctor) is that fat is dissolved (to be used) by acetone. Ketones are the same thing, I think we make 4 types of 'tones'. No keytones = no fat loss, its impossible. Without ketones your body is in sugar / high GI burn mode and will do almost anything, including sending you to sleep, to not burn its valuable fat stores.

So what you’re trying to say is that unless you achieve ketosis via a low carb diet, fat loss is impossible- which isn’t true.

Not true. Eat less and the body will burn fat reserves naturally. Thats what they are for. I've lost weight in a sustained fashion by reducing portion size and staying off the beer 5 days a week. No ketosis, just the body behaving normally. Lost about 10 kg in 3-4 months.

What I'm saying is completely true, but I think you're imagining a deep Keto diet with absolutely no carbs.

You still produce ketones when consuming some carbs but much less than if you stop the carbs as much as you can and force your body to dig further into its fat reserves. Your body absolutely cannot do a thing with its fat without producing (some) ketones to break it down.

Anyway, don't take my word. Start looking up Keto and sports nutrition on you tube.

No, it is not completely true that "you'll not burn your fat if you're not in ketosis" because I've done it by simply eating less . It really can be that simple. Eat more, get fat. Eat less, get thinner.

No

Start looking up Keto and sports nutrition .
*start* looking up nutrition? I think I started a number of years ago.

Thanks.

I'm currently trying to bully myself back into using the rower.
I wonder if we've enough RowPro users for a PinkFish meet on the water?

I've never used it online, but anything to keep up the motivation...

Steve,

Google is your friend.

I think you need to google less and do a bit more basic thinking for yourself. Second hand wisdom isn’t doing you much good at the moment.

Your mentioning low carbs and ketosis - fair point. But then trying to assert that this is the only way that body fat is reduced is not true and perhaps you ought to be seeking broader knowledge rather than sticking to something you read on the internet or someone made a YouTube vid about.

The internet can be a fantastic resource but in terms of weight loss and fitness it is one of the worst places for people being absolute and trying to tell you there is only one way of doing this or that. So keep an open mind and evaluate your sources by taking on other information.

Just be aware that some people you’re saying are wrong and passing second hand knowledge off to just might have some knowledge and insight from nutrition and sports science, and have had access to elite level coaching etc.
