Next Labour Leader II

I know who I'd vote for Labour leader, and why - and that said, what I want to see first, upfront and right now is very simple: a functioning, strong Opposition.

The UK has been without one of any stripe for at least a decade or two; and as such a thing is essential to our neolithic form of parliament - it's no small part of the mess we are in.

Without it, talk of who might win what election is a number-of-angels-dancing-on-the-pinhead discussion. Oh this pinhead , or that one? - nah, show me some quality in depth first.

This is a question I have too: what will the far-right press use to smear Nandy if she ever poses a threat to the status quo?

Her Indian father who was a Marxist and the fact that her grandfather was a Liberal peer, so she’s a brown commie and elite to boot.

edit: and she has a lisp.

That lisp will sink her.

It’ll definitely be something that the RW media use, and if she has speech therapy to get rid of it (I doubt she would, tbh) , they’ll use that too. She’s going to have a rough ride, and she knows it.

I recently read that only one Labour leader born in the last 100 years had been elected. A fairly selective statistic, but I still found it startling.

I would say that makes her interesting, with a pedigree and perfect for the contemporary UK.

Wilson born 1916
Callaghan 1912

then Blair.

The underlying issue is that Labour have not won many elections. Their only hope is for the people to forget how sick an ideology socialism is. Or pivot to a more pragmatic and less destructive philosophy. Plenty of space for that. But not looking good at the moment.

Since when did Labour become a socialist party? I know some on the left of the party (along with sections of the right-wing media) like to pretend it is, but really it's nothing of the kind.

I think that Labours only hope of influencing the future direction of the country is PR and coalition government with like minded political groupings...it will have to acquire a great deal of humility about its position in British political life to swallow that. ( I don't think that they do humility and so are buggered )
Short of buying every single public sector vote with promises of very large wage rises they just will not and no longer have a sufficient constituency to win elections outright ...the Scots Nats seats they will never get back and the boundary changes and changing demographics have put paid to their chances .

The Labour situation in Scotland guarantees that. During the last election Ian Blackford from the SNP approached Labour to link up with them in the next term and was told to f-off. Ironically he has been much more of an opposition leader than Corbyn ever has. Labour are incredibly stupid sometimes.

This night in 1997 is one of the greatest in Labour's history. Oh how I'd long for a repeat of this again!

As far as I’m aware, all candidates have signed up to the 10 pledges demanded by the Board of Deputies.

Is it acceptable to accept interference and a level of control over the party from a organisation that is explicitly friendly to the Tory government ....

...and whose pledges are designed to undermine basic principles of justice and impact on significant aspects of Labour policy and personnel?

Pledge 5 for example seems to deny anyone accused of antisemitism of any means of support or defence which seems to undermine one of the basic principles of Justice

I have some sympathy with your comments, but I can guarantee you that the the BoD will say exactly the same thing to a future Labour PM, as long as the pledges are kept.

If you mean that signing up to the pledges will still fail to immune the next Labour Leader from attacks, I agree

And engaging with other Jewish bodies i.e. progressive, (rather than the BoD and the conservative side of the religion) will be antisemitic. As will be defending anyone accused of the same...
