ok...I have just paid the 1st 100 pounds and added my name on wiki list but I had no reply from anyone.
Let's hope for the best ;)

I would certainly welcome a balanced AV bypass in my system, even if this means having 2 dangling leads for balanced inputs on the back of the MDAC2. My L3 MDAC has single ended bypass, which is a very good start, but a compromise as my whole system runs balanced.

Guess we will include an option for "Dangling leads XLR Balanced AV Bypass" at an additional cost ("at cost" for those "community supporting" the MDAC2 project development - Oh and including those who own a Toy or Fusion upgraded unit) :)

Carloica,

Thank you for your payment received earlier this morning, Renata will reply shortly with confirmation and any questions.

Hi,

It's been a while since I've last been on the forum. Where are we in regards to MDAC 2?

Thanks.

David

Hi David,

About to issue the Prototype PCB for the new analogue stage design - Its going to be interesting to discover how much the prototype PCB will cost here in Europe - we get prototypes for free in China...

The attached PCB component overview shows the MDAC2 rear panel connector arrangement with the balanced 4W XLR for the headphone output located between the XLR output connectors.

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/86116171/MDAC2 Prototype Analogue stage Stg1.jpg

The MDAC2 analogue stage is a really a mini ClassA power-amplifier, in fact it will drive 1.2 Ohm loads to full level (2V Rms) (ignoring Heatsinking and PSU requirements) - its designed for direct connection to low impedance headphones :)

The design uses 16 Mosfet devices (4 x 4) mounted on 4 heatsink "bars" to help dissipate the ClassA generated heat.

On MDAC2 we have also used a higher quality type Relay (Hopefully reducing one of the original designs weakness).

I'm really looking forward to listening to the new Output stage design :) , I'll attach the new PCB to an existing MDAC for first listening test - although its just one small section of the new design.

how to get a mpax supply?

MPAX is on hold as the MDAC2 update will offer a much greater improvement then any simple external PSU upgrade - a PSU upgrade would offer poor value for the money / performance ratio, its one of the reasons we decided that design time and effort is better spent on the DAC itself.

I draw the line at soldering though, sorry I'm just not practical enough and I know it would look bad by the time I will have covered it in solder.

Roksan Caspian Mk1 power amp spotted for £400, no balanced inputs though. Any good?Thought the integrated mk2 was pretty good when I heard it last year. Never heard this one though.

Find a Quad 606 or 909 (or even 306) and I can upgrade its performance for you...

What speakers are you using - can they be bi-wired? if so then maybe a pair of 306 will do - (these are lighter to ship to me so I can improve there performance for you :) )

How about a simple switch box. XLR out from Mdac into XLR input in switchbox. Switchbox also has AV input and later a Vol control operated by Mdac remote.

:cool::cool:

I can bang out some wooden cases, with an extension for the switch box thus leaving the original Mdac for use in a second system, if we could obtain some front panels.

Thank you. That's very much appreciated

Thank you John...When do you expect are you going to be ready to upgrade our mdacs?

I'm already a month behind with the MDAC project (Analogue stage PCB should have been released early November - I'm issuing it in the coming days) - so its looking like April at this moment... the extra design time has resulted in a better product - especially for headphone users with its high power output stage.

great! As I said before I do really need to ask your help to swap the PCB when ready so I am going to send you my MDAC when requested ;)

This guy looks like a good candidate :)

These appear way too cheap... amazing if they go for this kind of price (and its a genuine listing)...

Hi, sry if the same question has been posted before.
Yesterday when I tried to turn on my m-dac, something strange happened. The usual "click" sound came, but then nothing happened, as in that the display remained black. Then after about 35 secs the display says "LAKE WEST", but shows nothing else and doesn't respond to anything. I tried several times, but could not get it to boot properly. The unit was not warm.

I left it off until this morning, and today it turned on OK on the first try. I then swithced it off again to check the firmware version, but then the same problem occured and after this I've not been able to start it (because of this I don't remember the firmware version, but at least i remember I upgraded it to get the auto dimming of the display. This is also the firmware that it's been working fine with for many months).

Anyone have an idea what might cause this, and how it can be fixed?

ktre,

Sounds like Crystal failure (Clock Circuit) - one of MDAC's weakest points, your unit will need to be returned for service.

Try re-flashing the software , any version to try it.
