It seems to be heavily 'inspired' by Nagra gear like the Nagra IV.
But whereas classic professional Nagra design is driven primarily by functionality and the need for an operator to easily access the controls of a small handheld device, this seems to have set out to just put as many bits and bobs on the front panel as possible as some kind of design statement.
That said I think if you replaced the volume control with the weird visible gearing mechanism with a standard knob it would be fussy but passable.
