If I spend too much on kit it can detract from the enjoyment due to the sheer cost. It can also distract me from the music, defeating the purpose.
 
After giving up beer for 3 years to save up for and buy component X that will make your system perfect, the maker of component X will a week after said purchase, release a MK II version that gets rave reviews and is said to sound substantially better than your crappy old, brand new MK I

We listen for and prioritise different things. That's what makes hi-fi such an individual pursuit.
 
I find the opposite. A great system shows bad recordings for what they are. A poor system on the other hand can mask a bad recoding.
He’s talking about great systems making crap recordings enjoyable. This I agree with, regardless of the system making crap recordings sound crap from a hi-fi aspect.
