A strange comparison some may say, but Art Dudley as a writer was similar to John Arlott and Richie Benaud as cricket commentators. The "art" or key to their success is the choice and use of words, sadly lacking in these present times.
How sad. What a lovely humble man he always seemed. Genuinely passionate about this hobby rather than geekily obsessive in that weird way that stops me ever going to Audio Shows.
He just had exactly the right attitude to audio IMO. His is one of few reviewer systems I’d really be happy to own/use day to day and there were countless real gems in his record collection. He got it.
While I never knew the man personally, I'd run into him while record shopping every once and a while, and ask his opinion on various recordings. He was always unfailingly polite and helpful, perhaps humble to a fault, and completely genuine. When I told him I was a longtime subscriber to 'The Listener', he smiled and simply said, "I hope you enjoy it". The only audio reviewer I ever completely trusted.
