Any suggestions for Tony L

just get a free soundcloud account and give search details not web links....

That would still be encouraging software piracy, and would place myself /my business at risk. Needle-drops are an utter non-issue, the site was fine before people started posting things here, it's fine after I very firmly banned them and deleted all links. If folk "need" this feature they are free to find other forums that offer it, as pfm never will. There is simply no movement or debate here.

Also, it takes literally seconds to find reasonable quality images of any album art ever produced. Google it.

Indeed. The only point is to establish condition, and if people desperately want that I'd happily do it by email for expensive collectable items (say >£25) where I have indicated the cover grade is below an EX. It's not really worthwhile otherwise as I aim my grading to be on the conservative side of accurate.

As an example there is a already a couple of pictures up for the Tureck Bach Goldberg Variations as that's currently the most valuable item in the shop:

I'd still argue the pictures are less useful than a good written grading, e.g. you can't tell if there's any spine-creasing, laminate lift, and due to the nature of auto-colour balancing etc in modern digicams (actually an iPhone 4S in my case) any age yellowing etc may not be recorded accurately either.

Thanks for the opportunity - I have one serious suggestion , don't know if this has been mentioned before.

A key component of pfm is the classifieds, but they are technically discussion threads. Simply make the classified threads available to the OP only - any questions can then be answered by PM, and further info can be later provided by the OP. This will stop adverts being turned into discussions, or worse, fishing trips for other sellers/buyers etc.

Cheers
Chris

That's actually a very good idea and easy to implement. I'll give it some thought. The negative is it breaks the visual time-line, i.e. it's no longer public knowledge who has expressed an interest, or in what order.

How about getting a PFM Test Disc pressed and making it available to members? Some tones and some original music recordings.

You would own the copyright so Paul and other interested parties could Needledrop test to their heart's content.
I don't think copyright matters at all here, Google would still be arses about it. It's just not worth it.

It would also be a chance to get a test disc that demonstrated qualities such as "tune", "Timing" and of course the old favourite PRAT :)
It can certainly disabuse some of the validity of those notions.

More useful is the opportunity to evaluate pressing, mastering and resolution differences.

Never mind.

Paul

I don't use the classifieds much but the public discussion of an item for sale (e.g. any questions posed by potential buyers about details missing from the initial post) can be useful to other potential buyers which would not be seen if conducted by pm.

Yes, for example, I recently enjoyed a 3 page discussion of the WT Classic, with no real hope of a sale.

"PM sent" shows interest in the item and bumps the thread. Closing the thread to others stops that. Relevant discussion of the item is surely also useful - e.g. stuff the OP might not have originally mentioned. Anything private then can and should be kept to PM.

Which I believe is largely how it works at present...

I know Tony probably hasn't the inclination but I'd buy all my new vinyl from him if I could, and some months that's hundreds of pounds worth. I would even forgo getting it next day, as is my want, to buy from him.

And you don't need to put the pictures of the albums up on here directly a Flickr account would be perfect. Just ask the members how many of them have never bought an album they haven't seen first.

I'd support that as well.
My new vinyl purchase is going up in frequency and value and I would be more than happy to buy most of them from Tony

You got market value, £751 less fees to eBay for a deck that cost you £4,500 several years back.

It would be good to improve the relevance / value (and hence price and volume) of the adverts at the top of the page. If you could get offers that were specific to pfm then it is a win/win for pfm and the advertisers ... I would be more likely to click the adverts - e.g. if I click the Ocado advert it just tells me that they have already sent me an offer <yawn>.

Also you could classify threads and (for example) offer a company specialising in Naim products access to those threads at a modest premium in price, also we the readers get more relevant adverts.

One annoying feature is posters ability to edit quotes to inject "humour" into their posts, appending things like "fixt" or "I fixed it for you."

A poor idea IMo and I can see no reason for it.

The classifieds run very well so far as I can tell and any discussion and questions and answers simply illuminate.

I'm glad you took such an interest and I'm very happy the eventual purchaser was from pfm. Certainly don't care that it went for a trip to Tesco's less than it might. I meant 'no real hope of a pfm sale'. I said it cost £4,500 new.

I fixed that shit for yo' ass.

Chris,

Sorry, I can't help myself. Obsessive–compulsive disorder and a penchant for correct grammar are my special gifts.

I couldn't avoid seeing mention of your pending sale on quite a few threads that I frequented.
