All purpose football thread 2022/23 Season

SWFC have won the First Division title four times and the FA Cup three times. They won the League Cup in 1990-91 and competed in UEFA Cup a couple of times in the 60s and Europa Cup a couple of times in the 90s.
NUFC have won the First Division title four times and the FA Cup six times. NUFC have compiled 16 seasons in European competition, including three in the Champions League.
In both cases trophy success (League Cup aside) was in ancient history.

To say SWFC are "probably bigger in historical terms" is inaccurate. "Similar" would be fair comment IMO.
I did say, ‘probably’ but I think they have been established longer & so historically more significant. It’s hard to compare European records as the champions league & other competitions have expanded opportunities for teams of late.

Anyway, it’s certainly not a hill I’d choose to die on.

A really good win for my team, Manchester City, yesterday, who scored some very, very good goals against a poor Chelsea, who never really got into the game. It was great to see Julian Alvarez getting some minutes after 12 months of constant football. Sergio Gomez, another unheralded buy, played very well and will, hopefully emerge as a good player for us. It was good to see Kyle Walker getting up to speed again and also for Kalvin Phillips to see some minutes after his dislocated shoulder, operation and rehab. Rodri remains imperious and a player who continually dominates games with little fanfare.

I think a decision needs to be made about VAR in cups: you should not have it in some games and not in others, in the same tournament, IMO. The number of questionable decisions in games featuring it remains a problem.

so made a day of it with family and did the cathedrals and the excellent transport museum. Football was the icing on the cake really.

Good choice. My son went to Coventry Uni which they have done a good job in blending with the bombed out and new cathedrals. The Thrust SSC is quite something in the museum and there is (or used to be) an Ikea at the top of the precinct should you require a LAC table or pasta meatballs sustenance. Far Gosford St market was always bustling and used to have a good used record shop. The Ricoh Arena is quite a bit out of town from memory.

The teenager was enamoured with the thrust whereas I was more interested in stiff like the Triumph Herald, Hellman Imp, the Siddeleys and the old jags.

The arena is now the Coventry Building Society Arena. It was about 15 minutes drive out and I shan’t be complaining given that we were dropped outside and had a decent view. Dreadful stadium to get out of.

Well done to Southampton on their victory against Manchester City. 2 good goals, excellent setup, aggressive pressing and a clear game plan saw us create very little and our form is patchy, not helped by injuries and the World Cup, but patchy nevertheless, with a loss to Brentford, a draw with Everton, and a loss to Southampton as the evidence in recent results. So what is the problem compared to usual: the full-back position, central defensive injuries, as well as the integration of Haaland.
In an attempt to control transitions, Pep has introduced inverted full-backs to completely dominate the midfield, and it has seen the emergence of Rico Lewis on the right, who seems blessed for the role. When the ball is turned over, which isn't often, there is space wide behind the full-back position. Last night, Pep experimented with Cancelo as right full-back, and Walker as centre-back and it failed. Now, it failed because Southampton played a blinder, but Walker, especially, was all at sea; he is not a centre-back. On the left, Sergio Gomez had a poor game, which is a shame because he is talented and played well against Chelsea - he is learning the role and had a poor one. Phillips had his first start after a long time out and it showed. He continually moved in the line of the opposition player, effectively ruling himself out of receiving the pass, something that is the opposite of Rodri's play. By really pressing high, and stopping the ball to Philips, the central defenders (without John Stones) were not able to beat the press as effectively as usual and we looked vulnerable. When the press was beaten, Southampton retreated, en-masse, into two banks of five, quite rightly, and the forward line looked incapable of creating. He has to put it right against United at the weekend, or we will drop points.
