All, I'm looking to buy an XPS for my CDX & am getting very confused over Burndy cables. Is there more than 1 type (e.g differing ones for Pre-amps & CDs) & if so how can I tell which 1 will connect a CDX to an XPS?

Mine also came with a felt mat (and was an early one) - I purchased a Planar 2 before upgrading to a Linn Axis & then an LP12. I fondly remember the Planar as a great bit of kit

Without wanting to state the obvious, it all depends on taste. You need to listen to both (with your speakers & CD) & decide what is correct for you.

Depending on your budget you could go down the pre / power route. This helps with future upgrades. I started with a Naim NAC 92R / NAP 90 & gradually progressed from there.
