    Superfi gone

Nottingham HiFi are still trading although I would guess their future is also in the balance.

Audio Note UK - impressive at KLAV

Some of you may be unaware of the history of the split between Audio Note(Japan) who subsequently rebranded as Kondo KSL and Audio Note (UK) and interested to read this post by the late Hiroyasu Kondo in 2000: http://www.audioasylum.com/cgi/t.mpl?f=general&m=37527

Michell Orbe - SME Model 10

Hi Ian, I used to own a beefed-up Gyrodec with SME IV arm before moving over to SME decks starting with the 10. Yes, I found the Michell warm and friendly sounding but much prefer the authority, grip and firmness the SME brings to the party. The SME arm is a much better than the Tecnoarm with...

    Another visit to James, Blzebub.

Some good points re.SME! Ortofon also haven't been the most fashionable maker of MC cartridges, but their recent offerings really have hit the mark. I think the A90 is now discontinued? I love its bare bones appearance, more so than the top end Anna. I hope they produce a replacement for the MC...

Balanced input phono stage for MC?

Thanks for the clarification! The CEC is a very unassuming unit, but it can't half do some very magical things with my vinyl. It's the finest phono stage I've had in my system which includes some far pricier solid state and valve designs.

Balanced input phono stage for MC?

I currently use a CEC PH53 which has this option, but am connecting my MC cartridge via a step-up transformer into the MM input of the CEC via single ended i/cs. CEC strongly recommend using the balanced input as the circuitry is so designed for best performance. As far as I understand it...

    MBL

I stuck it out a little longer to hear what all the fuss was about but ended up leaving underwhelmed after a short listen - all artificial fizz and tizz. In fact this was symptomatic of most of the exhibits I heard, very disappointing and reassuring in the same measure. It wasn't helped by the...

    Freeview HD

Freeview HD reception was a problem in our region(Nottingham) until after the second switchover day. I didn't realise our Sony had an inbuilt Freeview HD tuner which came as a pleasant surprise. However, I don't bother with this as Digibox's sound is handled by a very nice Yamaha soundbar making...

    Freeview HD

Sony SDR-HDT1000 here. :) We've gone through a handful of Humax boxes over the years all of which had a tendency to crash frequently at the most awkward times (ie.when we had set to record an important programme-not Corrie!!), so we thought to try something else. HD Freeview picture...

    Re-glueing LP sleeves

Not saying this is the definitive version here as I also use PVA (wood glue) whereas the clear UHU type is used in this example: http://mintlp.com/wild/repair.htm

Hi-Fi Choice on the endangered species list!

I still subscribe to Hifi+ but find fewer articles and reviews of interest with each issue. The rot started with their purchase by TAS and then editor Roy's move to richer pastures with Nordost and the increasingly rare appearances by some of their previously more regular writers. I don't like...
