Liam Gallagher's brother...

U2: Oh go on then...

A couple of years ago, U2 moved their music publishing company to Holland to halve their taxes.

While avoiding tax himself, Bono continues to act the same sanctimonious berk he's been since the mid-80's, inciting anyone who'll listen to condemn Western politicians for not sending enough of their taxpayers' money to the poor and needy around the world. Hence, plenty of people in Ireland and beyond loathe the hypocritical twunt for forcing fellow Irish citizens, who don't make $100 million a year like his band does, to pick up the bill, not only for foreign aid, but for health, education, law and order, defence, and so on.

Add to that all their records since 1983, and that's two good reasons for me not listening to U2.

<end of rant>

Oasis: is my Definitely Maybe really worth £60?

I have often been guided by blind prejudice in my musical taste.
What a ridiculous statement. If someone on here takes that attitude when buying a piece of hi-fi, be it a turntable, arm, cartridge etc etc there would be reams of members saying you had done they wrong thing! So why take that blind prejudice view towards a particular band? I've never been told by anyone never listen to classical music, it's just something that doesn't appeal to me. It's called making your own mind up and using your own judgement and ears.

Oasis: is my Definitely Maybe really worth £60?[/QUOTE]

I had two copies of each of the first two Oasis albums and sold them both on ebay last year for about £60 each in mint condition.

I don't like debating about music, as there's few things more subjective than whether a band is any good. Pretty much any argument you base your dislike for one band or artist on could be used against someone you like a lot.

I can be undecided about Oasis because whichever way you look at it definitely maybe pretty much sums up an entire era of British music and they were a massive part of British culture in the 90s. You could say the same things about the spice girls and the beatles, and you could argue whether they were any good as well tbh.

This post sums it up for me. Who cares if they are shite. Why bother to argue they are/are'nt. If you don't like it don't listen to it - simples.

I never paid much attention to Oasis. I have a CD of them but it's never on. I was stumped though when I stumbled on an interview with Noel Gallagher. That guy was bright and interesting! Sort of outgrown his rough background without actually leaving it. I still didn't dig up that cd afterwards though. So that sums it up for me till now. Maybe I should go find that cd now and then later buy them all.

Oasis paid money to the Ruttles for ripping off one of their tunes, 'I am free to be an idiot'
says it all.

Not the worst surely; Kasabian, Starsailor, Snow Patrol.........the list is endless.

On a serious note, I never ever understood the whole brit pop and post brit pop scene. It seems as though its aimed at people who have a problem with life but the solution is in superficial music.

I mean come on The Smiths et al, its just 80s Bob Dylan; and he was a moaning bugger............contraversial I know but his music is just, well, not musical.

I'll get my coat.

The Smiths....Superficial and not musical to some, for others genuinely funny lyrics steeped in irony married to some of the best tunes of the decade- Totally enthralling and very worthwhile.

IMO The Smiths are a very musical band and the lyrics are quite amusing miles ahead of Oasis, who could copy The Smiths?.

smiths and oashite are polar opposites: smiths are utterly unique, 3 dimensional, musically marvellous & wholly intelligent.. oashite are utterly derivitive, 2 dimensional, musically poor & wholly stupid.

& this is so if you think mozzer's a modern Oscar Wilde(me) or indeed if you think he's merely a twat.

Oasis haven't made a decent record since 1994.

It's about time they gave up.

They support a football team that is nearly as crappy as their songs.

I bought the first one on vinyl, whatever it's called, the one with Burt Bacharach on the cover, when it first came out and have played it 3 times at most. Do you think it's better to sell now or wait until one of them dies?

Well, more accurately Neil Innes' "How Sweet To Be An Idiot", taken from an early album he released after leaving the Bonzos. There's a version sung by Innes on the album "Monty Python Live at Drury Lane".
They also forked out to the rights owners of "I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing".

If you ever saw The Stone Roses for the first time on Rapido, or Oasis playing Supersonic for the first time, you'd maybe have liked them. Instead, despite being a top bloke, you stick up for tax specialists U2, who last made a record worth hearing when I was about twelve!

I think that sums it up perfectly, that 1st album and all the B sides up to 'Don't look Back in Anger' werel class. Especially if you were 16, haven't heard a decent band in about 2 years, and want to jump up and down for an hour and a half at the front of a gig. For those who were there and liked it, it was truly like going to a good club night with a fantastic atmosphere. Never mind Britpop; as usual, just a label invented in a vain attempt to package a scene for others and make some cash.

The bolshy attitude, rough production and catchy tunes all helped too. I don't think I'd quite get it so much if another band did it again now, but then again I'm 15 years older.

However, it's no real loss to music is it? They've not written more than a couple of decent songs since 1996 IMHO and I've never been tempted to see them live since then either.

As for U2, I'd rather eat my face than allow myself to admit to liking them, that said, Auchtung Baby, and bits of Pop weren't all shite.
