Hmmmm
Rogers Studio One
Castle Howard
Audiovector S1
Audiovector S3 (various upgrades)
Proac D18
Rega R3
PMC Twenty21
Harbeth SuperHL5+
Harbeth Super HL5+ 40th Anniversary
And a pair of Harbeth P3ESR in another room.

Yes the long search is over

From the time I had my first hi-fi system in 1976

MAIN SYSTEM
Videoton Minimax 2 - belonged to my brother in law and I used them for a couple of years while he was working abroad
SONY ????? can't remember what model
Gale ???? can't remember what model these were either
Griffin Phoenix
Linn Kan MkI
Linn Kaber MKI- owned these for 22 years first passive single amp, passive tri-amp, Activ (Tune Box tri-amp), ExaKt (Exaktbox tri-amp)
Kudos Super 20A (Exakt bi-amp)

SECONDARY SYSTEM
NAD 801 - later used in kitchen
Castle Trent II - owned for 23 years but last year replaced by
Dynaudio Special forty in grey birch

KITCHEN SYSTEM
NAD 801 - brother in law has these on loan
Linn AV5110

A bit of a short list compared to many here:

AR 18
Boston A40
Linn Kan 1
Epos ES11
Linn Sara 9 - Didn't stay long. Maybe my 32.5/Hi/160 wasn't up to the job of controlling them
Linn Kan II
Royd RR2 - Good fun speaker
Shahinian Arc - A very old pair with knackered drivers. Sound flabby in the bass
Naim SL2 - Current speakers. Can't see myself changing from these for a long time

Other than the Sara 9s and Shahinians I enjoyed them all. Favourites would be the Kans and SL2s.

Speakers I'd loved to have tried / owned:
Heybrook HB-1
Naim IBL

which were your favorite to listen to Coltrane?

Always wanted to hear IBLs & DBLs, have had SBLs for over 10 years

It’s hard to do this in chronological order, especially since I’ve owned a few multiple times and often concurrent with others but here goes,

Sony SS-86e (first speakers I bought as part of a separates system, all Sony, out of my paper round money aged 14)

Mordant Short VS100 (bought blind as an upgrade from the Sony speakers, promised by a mail order dealer that they were better than MS10s... they were crap, I kept the Sony speakers in my system)

Mordant Short MS20 pearls (much better)

Tannoy Mercury MX2s (a bit meh, I used them in TV setup and kept the MS20s in my HIFI system)

Kef Q15s (lots of fun but not the last word in refinement, loaned them to a mate and he destroyed them)

Rega Ela MK1 (excellent, traded in but quickly bought some more, a relative is still using them)

Linn Keosa (not a keilidh but not anywhere near as bad as they’re made out to be by some people, gave them to my uncle along with a Majik, he’s still using them)

Linn Keilidh (what I’d always wanted, loved them, owned four pairs)

Linn Tukans (second system, lovely speakers)

Royd Minstrels (second system, loads of fun)

Linn Ninkas (owned three pairs and currently have a pair in my main system)

Linn Katans (second system, one of my favourite standmount speakers, also owned three pairs)

Linn Keltiks (had these longest in my main system but sold the whole system to fund a house move)

Focal 1038be (bought a few years ago ex dem and returned within days, supposed to replace my Keltiks but couldn’t hold a candle to them, overblown bass in shrill treble)

Royd sapphire MK1 (currently in my second system, a tad uncouth but lots of fun)

Q Acoustics 3010 (bought last week for the wallet busting sum of £28, they’re in my desktop system, they’re remarkable for their full retail price and for £28, they’re an absolute steal, I feel no need to look for anything better for my desktop system).

There’s probably some other stuff I’ve forgotten about too... yep,

Rega el8s (quite lightweight sounding, bit more depth than the Kyte but not a lot, fun with the right music)

Rega Kyte (too lean, fast and detailed midrange but just too little in the bass department)

Rega Ela Mk2 (they were cheap so bought to compare with the MK1, I thought the MK1 had the edge so let the MK2s go again)

well, I like(d) the Royd RR2s the best, close seconds are the Audio Physic 3i JLEs (only a much larger room indicated the swap), and the 3rd place goes to the JBL 4412s (don't be fooled by them being studio monitors, they were just amazing as audiophile speakers on all genres). what really was a disappointment, however, were the Harbeth HL-Compact 7ES MkIIs> lifeless (as opposed to dynamic) and an overall uninvolving sound with pretty blind tone colours...

... these threads come up regularly across forums and each time they never cease to amuse me on a number of fronts; just for fun, here's a few obvious ones:

- How old we all seem to be eg sheer numbers owned
- Few new or young audio enthusiasts posting
- The amount of money some have and how others waste money eg top-end kit; repeat buys; next model up 'syndrome'
- Being constantly unsettled with what we have eg buying in some cases what looks like one or two sets of new speakers a year; seeking synergy...
- The lack of women posting and little mention of our wives getting involved in buys
- That some brands don't seem to figure that much eg PMC

Obviously these observations are just generalisms accross all 7 pages of feedback and I'm very sure there are lots more observations and implications (eg how many treat their rooms ? whose Hi-Fi got them divorced etc).

..... and I'm also sure our behavior will stay just as it is !!!

regards, richard :)

A long list of classic crackers there! - and avoiding the whole Linn/Naim axis too!

Rega Kytes had no bass, at all
Yes, I’m not a bass head by any means but they were just too anemic, the only speakers I’ve used for less time were the Focals which were just unbearably bright and with overblown bass to add to my dissatisfaction.
