"...matured in 100% first fill Oloroso sherry casks. We don’t get an age statement, but we do get a distillation date of 2012 and a bottling date of 2021. Therefore, it is safe to assume this is either eight or nine years old. It’s peated to 55ppm, which, for reference, is similar to Ardbeg."

Aberlour A'Bunadh
dunno where we got this from (not anywhere online) so probably on one of our roadtrips - really cannot get on with it. Tried with various amounts of water to release flavour, but no luck. Looks like i wasted my money - will give it away to someone in my local who likes a whisky

The Abunadh, IMO, has been crap for a good while now

It's become over-commercialised and with a very false, 'trying too hard' taste IMO...

Wouldn't recommend it at all, to anyone now; more so at the daft price it's generally listed at!

What's the Batch number?
The received wisdom is it has gone downhill in quality and the price was bumped dramatically a couple of years ago.

Arran Bodega is the current go to for young, high strength sherry matured at a reasonable price (sub £50 and often discounted).

batch 63

The Bodega Cask wasn’t on my radar, will have to investigate. Always considered the Glenfarclas 105 as the alternative (I preferred the A’bunadh). I remember the Dailuaine Flora & Fauna as no slouch in the sherry bomb stakes, even more so the Blair Atholl. Both after dinner sippers tho,’ couldn't manage more than a couple of either in an evening.

I like this: "the distilled equivalent of the scene at the end of Star Wars Episode III when Obi-Wan and Anakin battle it out above the volcanic rivers of Mustafar."
So fiery and sulphurous...which he must like as he gives it an 8.

Some interesting remarks in the comments section (especially about the price hike), particularly from Welsh Toro whose opinions I rate.

Another vote for Arran Bodega. Incidentally, I see the latest Port Charlotte 10 has been very well received by Ralfy, for anyone mourning the Lag 16.

Current Abundh version is £87 on Amazon for circa 8yo cask strength.
Arran 18 is about same price...just loses out on strength at 46%

Whiskybroker Ardmore 12yo (50.0% ABV) 2009/2021

First 8y 8m in refill ex-bourbon, last 3y 5m in refill sherry. NCF, natural colour. Single cask bottled at cask strength, yielding 266 bottles. Still available from Whiskybroker at £39.50 (70cl).

A couple of drops of water were added to a generous dram. Doesn't need much at 50%.

Colour: old gold

Nose: Classic sherry nose, quite Christmassy with dried berry fruits and baking spices (cloves, cinnamon). Old leather and a touch of floor polish (the type you'd get with those big ride-on circular buffers for parquet flooring in the school hall...showing my age ). After a while, some chocolatey malt comes though in the background, along with the peat, which is quite different from most Islay (except Lagavulin) or coastal peat; quieter, like spent ashes from last night's fire in the hearth.

Mouth: Well-sherried arrival. Dried Christmas berry fruits like the nose, with added candied peel now. The peat comes in on the development and takes over at the finish, without dominating entirely - the berry fruits are always there in the background. This is my first go with Ardmore and the peat is quite unlike any other I've had from Islay (except again, it has similarities to Lagavulin). It is herbaceous - lots of sage and thyme - and quite mentholated on the finish.

Overall: 8/10. Really very good. Like smoking a menthol cigarette dipped in sherry. There are quite a lot of similarities here to Laga 16, but with the brakes off. I opened a bottle of Laga 16 last week after spending some time with this over the last couple of weeks and it felt quite anaemic in comparison; very...'commercial'. If you like Laga 16 then I think this will be right up your strasse and at under £40 for 50%, single cask, NCF etc compared to what is now being asked for Laga 16 at 43%, coloured and chill-filtered, it's a no-brainer to me. Grab it while you can!

I just received a bottle of Arran Bothy Quarter Cask from my brother for my upcoming 40th. I'm excited to finally give it a try since it nominally replaced the 14 year, my longtime favorite, in the lineup.
