Whisky II

The Malt Review has increasingly focused on bourbon since ownership went to the US, but I thought this was quite interesting on water shortages and the Loch Lomond Whisky Exchange single cask:

Note it is Michael Henry of Loch Lomond (and Glen Scotia) who is behind the swathe of innovative releases coming out of late.
Yup, I’ve been tramping the Scottish hills for over forty years and never known them so dry as recent years. Huge wildfires everywhere. Salmon can’t spawn etc. I read this morning we’re currently on course for. 3°-4°rise in global temperatures. Goodnight Vienna. It’s enough to turn you to drink.

I picked up a bottle a few weeks back in Shrewsbury. Nice wee whisky shop, had some generous free tasters and good chat. Paid significantly more than that (!) but decent dram and happy to support locals. Their record shops also shut early that day!

I went to Coll and Tiree a couple of weeks ago. Both were absolutely parched, locals were saying they have never known anything like it.
The Tiree distillery has progressed from gin to whisky but isn't ready to bottle yet.

Opened the Kilkerran 16 yo. IME a bottle rarely gives of its very best until at least half empty, but so far… meh. It’s unmistakably of the Springbank stable and by no means a bad whisky, but neither is it rocking my world right now.

I enjoyed mine but it's a quiet one (I'd drink it as a first dram of the night)...in a head to head with the 12 there wasn't much in it but the 16 had more of a dunnage/umami note which I liked.

I wasn’t wowed by Kilkerren, pleasant enough but Hazelburn was excellent. SB 12 and 15 are excellent of course but I’m unlikely to be able to buy replacements for the bottles I’m finishing off.

It’s no wonder you can’t buy Springbank when some greedy arsewholes rock up at Cadenhead’s shop and leave with several cases worth under their arm (multiple trips to a camper van in this instance)

Good review though

The Longrow hand-fill was excellent when we were there in Feb. Bought a 20cl and went back for a 70cl later in the week.
I don't understand why the shop don't impose more stringent purchase limits when there's ar$eholes pulling those stunts. My reading of it is that was the shop at the Distillery as the Washback Bar is mentioned.

Springbank is pretty much lost to the flippers and hoarders now. Shame, it was good while it lasted.

Buying cases for yourself and depriving others of bottles is incredibly selfish. But I don’t really blame anyone with no interest in whisky buying a bottle or two when they can make an immediate three or four hundred percent gain.

In the long, and often fruitless, hours (it's not so bad I'm retired and the washings done) I spend chasing limited releases I sometimes resort to idle fantasy around a lucky chance happening on an online Retailer's New Release page. Well today for the first time that idle fantasy came to life as I refreshed the Abbey Whisky front page and the Ardnamurchan UK Single Cask hove into view.

I added it and the new sherry cask release to my basket as quickly as my sausage fingers would allow and checked out rapidly with GPay. Order confirmation was almost instant and on returning to the shop I could barely contain my glee as the bottle went "out of stock". Yes it is I! Victorious! Up yours Bots!
No luck with the Paul Lanois.
I really need to get out more.
And then there's the nagging "bit pricey for a 7yo" doubt...
The sherry cask is still there (13,998 outturn so should be widely available for a while).

I managed a Hazelburn 14 yo half bottle in Monday night's auction. To think that just a few years ago you could get a full bottle for about the same price. I am eyeing the JD Gentleman Jack on Jeff's summer sale. I also saw the Aberlour 16 (£80), which I previously purchased along with a Berry Bros Glen Grant 1974 (37 yo) for less than £140 for the pair, times have definitely changed.

Only bagged an Appleton 12 so far, and trying to dissuade myself from the El Dorado 21. The Sazerac rye seems a very good deal at 40% off….Rare Breed at £46 ain’t bad. Whisky..nothing inspiring so far, was hoping for a Bunna 12…
