Where to buy vinyl

Hi I'm in Bury near Manchester. Bury did have a good independent record store called vibes which sadly closed a few years ago. There is a HMV but it does not sell vinyl.
I will have to go into Manchester where there is Piccadilly records and eastern block records and a big HMV that do vinyl. I will also have a look at the pinkish vinyl, how do you order and how much is postage?
Thanks for all the replies

If you can face a trip to Bolton, X Records has a decent basement full of 2nd hand vinyl. In Manchester I've spent quite bit in Vinyl Exchange, across the road from Piccadilly Records. Last time I went in Fopp they had a few records but looked to be clearing out the small vinyl section. I have not been in for a couple of months so might hae changed. I only go in HMV to buy DVD's for the nipper, and meet the boybands and X Factor second rungers.

Getting records home on my bike is not as easy as cds.

I am keen on Internet music shopping, and have started using DJPimp in Hackney is it.

He trades via Discogs and sells DJs record collections. Apparently I have purchased a lot of records from the Doc Scott collection, so they may be more to come there.

There is also an Argos style physical records shop where you go to a counter, ask for the records you want and a bloke goes out the back to the racks to find them. I will pay them a visit.

I got a mug of coffee at the record shop yesterday. Then we put on a Stormont album and tried to work out if they were any good or not. You don't get that on the internet.

Agreed, I am a big fan of physical records shops, and go to several each week, two yesterday is it. You can't beat the joy of discovering an interesting looking sleeve and the record therein, or finding a record you didn't know existed, like the White Hills / GNOD collaboration that was in the racks yesterday.

You don't get that on The Internet there.

There's an App for that called The Vinyl District is it.

Not perfect by any means, as it misses some and has others on that are closed, but it has led me to some good records shops up and down and across the land, and abroad too there.

Morning all,

Planning a trip to Brighton in this weekend, and yes with my wife :)

As I won't be allowed to spend too much time vinyl hunting.. would like some suggestion on the vinyl shop to be at. Did some research and came out with this website:

But I've only allowed to visit 2 stores.. can anyone suggest which ones to go for?

Ta!

That list is well out of date I'm afraid - pretty much all of the dance specialists on it are long gone, Rounder is gone.

I'd suggest for new stuff you try Resident in Kensington Gardens, and maybe Wax Factor on Trafalgar Street for secondhand. Borderline's still going, and isn't far from those two. All of them are in the North Laines area.

*waits for dss to chip in*

Hello, DSS here, ready to chip in is it.

Brighton has a good mix of records shops to cater for varying tastes, but overall seems in a state of flux at the moment.

Ones I can vouch for, having been recently.:

Resident
Borderline
Across the Tracks
Wax Factor and The Singles Bar one behind it.
The one above the Wolf & Gipsy clothes shop that doesn't often have a name
The three in the same building with Rare Kind on the ground floor and 2 above it, one of these does good minimal techno.
Heroes (or the one that replaced Ape)
THe soundtrack one by the station with the miserable owner.

In Lewes, up the road

Si's Records
The folk / roots one than sells mandolins and records.

The Endless one in Kensington Gardens came and went, but is rumoured to be making a physical reappearance.

Many, many have gone, and a lot of the lists are out of date there.

Used to be quite a few record shops around....drying up a bit now. I like the idea of a trusted list. Also had some success on fleabay was around 70% but now about 55 to 60% as some have a very wide interpretation of what "near mint" means.... but also had some bargains.... 5p for what was probably totally un-played nice record up to well quite a bit more...gulp... depends what you are looking for..... but yeah a gamble.

Most importantly in Lewes is Union Music in Lansdowne Place. Very small but well chosen, and you'll have a long conversation about stuff while you are there. Folk & Country.

If you drive to Brighton and try to park within 3 miles of the centre, remember that I'll cost £3.50 an hour to park, we are knee deep in rubbish, the roads are mostly closed and 1/3rd of the shops are boarded up. We've had a Green council for three years now and we're pretty much on our knees.

Union Music - that's the folk / mandolin one is it.

As approved by Mumford & Sons, if that sort of thing is good for you.

If I am in Brighton on a Saturday, I go to the college car park just behind Trafalgar St which is £5 all day there. HTH

It's not the same one as Si's Sounds if that's what you mean.
Don't bother with Octave on the High Street because he's a miserable bastard.

Yes, Si's Music and Union Music are two different shops is it

SI's music has a load of punk 7" and a good variety of 2nd hand, where there was good chance I would find something to buy. (Not their copy of The Pink Floyd DSOTM though)

Union Music did not have any punk 45s, and was not likely to sell me anything there.
