War declared, Israel v Palestine...

France deploys riot police, cuts funding to quell campus protests over Gaza

Campus sit-ins upend Sciences Po and Sorbonne in Paris as students decry Israel’s ‘genocide’ and university partnerships.

France doesn’t want a Columbia encampment here’

Eliana*, a French American student who requested anonymity for security reasons, believes the French government pressured university officials to let security forces in.

“In my first meeting with the [university] administration during the occupation on Wednesday, a member of the administration received a phone call and was told to do everything to get us out of the university, as the government was putting pressure”, she recalled.

“My analysis is that the government didn’t want a Columbia [University-style] encampment here in France, they didn’t want to be faced with that image”, she told Al Jazeera, referring to the protests at the US university that have made global headlines.

Thousands have joined pro-Palestine protesters at Columbia, an Ivy League university, and several other US schools. Hundreds have been arrested while some have been suspended from their courses.

“Sciences Po thought it was acceptable to call the cops on their own students. We are in utter disgust at this decision, but we also have a stronger resolve to push for our demands,” said Eliana.

Listened to the Palestinian Representative in Britain, Dr. Husam Zumlot interviewed by Evan Davis on R4 this afternoon. He set out the Palestinian position on statehood, with Israel back behind its internationally recognised pre-1967 borders and a cessation of violence against the Palestinian population. Twice Davis interrupted him patronisingly with “the Israeli Govt might take a different view of that”.

Could you imagine a BBC journalist telling the Ukrainian Ambassador that President Putin might take exception to his assertion of Ukraine’s statehood and demand that Russia withdraws from its illegal occupation?

I heard that too and found him very impressive. He's right that these peaceful protestors really are the best of humanity - a light in the ever growing darkness.

Dozens arrested at Columbia University as New York police disperse Gaza protest

NYPD officers move on to campus on Tuesday evening to clear out Hamilton Hall building taken over by protesters, with reports of more arrests at City College of New York

"New York congressman Jamaal Bowman said he was “outraged” by the level of police presence at Columbia and other New York universities. He said on X: “The militarization of college campuses, extensive police presence, and arrest of hundreds of students are in direct opposition to the role of education as a cornerstone of our democracy.”"

Flash bang devices [stun grenades to you and me] were used to distract protesters as police moved to clear them out of Hamilton Hall, according to media reports quoting New York police.
The devices were used to "disorient protesters as police made their way inside", said news site CBS, adding that no tear gas was used.
One student the BBC spoke to said "about 80 - 100 police officers" had stormed the building.
Protesters had take over the Hamilton Hall building early on Tuesday, amid two weeks of campus protests over the Israel-Gaza war.

New York police also cleared protest at City College, CUNY

We’ve been reporting on police clearing a Gaza solidarity encampment at Columbia University, but police have also raided the nearby City College campus of the City University of New York (CUNY).
“They are mass arresting CUNY students in the middle of the night, while everyone is transfixed with the horrors at Columbia,” Jeanne Theoharis, a distinguished professor of political science at CUNY, wrote in a post on X.
NYPD Deputy Commissioner Kaz Daughtry said police had assisted in “restoring order on campus”.
