Putina brings in formidable allies:

Georgia’s breakaway region of South Ossetia will hold a referendum on joining Russia on 17 July, the region’s leader announced on Friday.
“Anatoly Bibilov signed a decree on holding a referendum in the Republic of South Ossetia,” his office said in a statement, citing his people’s “historic aspiration” to join Russia.

…he can do similar in fake Transnistria but he ‘ll have to book 6000 buses to get his yes voters repatriated to the Motherland.

That’s Massive!! Just shows the wisdom of that old saw that a turkey will vote for Christmas if it’s tail is twisted enough…
Become Russian before it’s too late!

Rumours the UA have won the battle for Kharkiv...russians retreating.
Kharkiv Ukraine's second city, so this is pretty momentous and very good news if confirmed.
If they take a city called Vovchans'k that will block a Russian logistics path (road & rail) South, think they are less than 10 miles away.

That'll be a significant challenge as they have to cross the Siverskyi Donets River. It is a Biggy and there are only three feasible crossing points to Vovchans'k which I'm sure the Russians will be ready to destroy as soon as...but you never know given their incompetence. They are probably too focused on their loot.

If anyone is interested I've just identified the exact spot on the Siverskyi Donets River where the Russian Armoured Battalion was destroyed when trying to cross. Drop these coordinates into google maps and select aerial photo view:

48°56'59.0"N 38°13'35.9"E

There's even some recent photos of of it on google maps. It is indeed a very good spot for a crossing as there is good tree cover on the approach and roads very close to both banks. The nearby buildings, tracks and pylons all show up on the aerial and ground photographs taken after the battle. The Ukrainians allowed a majority of the armoured vehicles to cross before shelling so there would be no escape. Apparently there had been three earlier failed attempts at other spots along the river and all three bridges have been lost. This is starting to look a little like the Allies attempts to cross the Rhine in September 1944.

Interview from Ukraine with a young Russian POW who gave himself up. Unedited and no apparent duress- much of it accords with what has already been reported about the quality of Russian military operations, notably brutality and lack of leadership by officers. I felt more hopeful after watching it. His phone call to his family near the end was revealing, hope he’s not imprisoned for speaking out on his repatriation to Russia. He can always claim the interview was extracted under duress but I bet he won’t be believed- tricky situation for him.

Yes, just like you telling us the successful attack the Moskva was ‘fake news’. Meanwhile more Europeans vote with their feet in the face of Putin’s threats (at least according to Russian state controlled news agency TASS)-

Expert expects Finland, Sweden to join NATO regardless of Russia’s position
“According to Oleg Barabanov, even the risk of Russia halting gas supplies to Finland won’t impact the process”.

That’s right, further threats haven’t had any effect.

The remarkable thing has been the speed and unity of Finnish political parties: both the SDP (mainstream social-democrats, in power) and the Vasemmistoliitto (radical left) voted to join NATO after a thorough parliamentary process. Both parties headed by very capable young women (Sanna Marin for the SDP, Li Andersson for the VL), who have been very decisive about burying 70+ years of neutrality.

Interesting also how these left wing parties are much clearer about the benefits of joining NATO than their equivalents in W. Europe (the good people at LFI in France, for instance, are still saying Finland joining NATO brings us closer to WW3). Could it be that proximity to the Russian border has an influence on thinking?

St Petersburg residents interviewed by Finnish media seem sad about "losing Finland": the majority of them seemed to view Finland as a peaceful, well-behaved neighbour, a Nordic Switzerland, good for holidays and shopping trips. A glimpse of what NW Russia could be if only it got its act together and ditched corruption. Spectacular own goal by Putin.

Good to see Finland not letting Putins threats influence its internal political processes and its sovereign rite to determine its own future.

Another sham leader - but not for long

Great- ‘outgoing’ leader (loses by a landslide) calls snap referendum on annexation by Russia. Putin also tried a coup in Montenegro with a planned attack on its Parliament and assassination of the Prime Minister and he’s installed puppet local rulers who will run rigged ballots to put a fig leaf over his annexation and mass refugee exodus in south and east Ukraine.

Ukrainians are being detained in filtration centres where their biometric data and personal information is being stolen from them. Anyone found to be government employees or supporters of their defence organisations are being taken captive on an industrial scale Stalin would have approved of.

That could make Gotland a bit of an issue for Russia.
Sweden decided to re-establish its military presence on Gotland a while back, but the other interesting one is the archipelago of the Åland Islands. The islands, although part of Finland, enjoy a lot of autonomy, and they have been demilitarized since the 19th century, at a time when Finland was a Russian Grand-Duchy (i.e. this was imposed on the Russian czar, who'd had a large fortress built on the island, in the aftermath of the Crimean War). This demilitarized status was confirmed in 1921, after Finland's independence from Russia, and reconfirmed by the Moscow treaty of 1940 that put an end to the Winter War.
