The 2023 Formula One Season

Rather than the car being painted black in its entirety, much of it is unpainted and run as raw carbon fibre.

The upper section of the nose and the engine cover feature matte black paint, but almost every lower element of the car, including the wings, are unpainted.

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff did not hide from the fact that the decision to be so bold in not painting its car has been driven by a bid to save extra mass.

“We were overweight last year,” he said. “This year we have tried to figure out where we can squeeze out every single gramme. So now, history repeats itself.

“You will see that the car has some raw carbon bits, along with some that are painted matte black.

“Of course, when we changed the livery in 2020 the main driving factor was to support the diversity and equality causes which are always close to our heart. The colour black became part of our DNA at that point, so we are pleased to return to it.”

Love it

No WRC round in Britain.

No WEC round in Britain.

One F1 round in Britain. And that is usually hanging on by its fingernails.

Not good, is it.

You still have most of the team headquarters...

I can’t really go and watch them. Especially McLaren which is well out of view and behind high security.

I think over the next ten years we’ll see a shift from England as it’s a pain in the arse to transport cars and parts now, and with more and more standardised parts, where the car is built is becoming less important.

Santa Pod used to attract a healthy number of European/Scandinavian Top Fuel and Funny Car teams, giving a great event. Not anymore. I think there were three TF and a tiny number of FC last year. Huge deposits required before bringing team/car/parts across, and a logistical headache. The crowds will dwindle.

Maybe teams will be incentivised to relocate to the middle east, as a lot F! finance [influence] appears to flow from the region. Even more races in the desert (for followers) to look forward to. . .

A lot of work was done by the teams with the FIA to try and decide on a set of standardised parts. They agreed on 0 parts.

Moving teams out of motorsport valley in the uk would be difficult enough if it was just the teams. But many of the specialist companies that manufacture parts for the teams that are based nearby would also need to move. In the mid 90s Ron Dennis tried to move McLaren to Lydden Hill near Dover (in part because there was a race / test track there, ready for development) but the team employees said no.

That is just the UK, Sauber shows how difficult it is to operate in another country with Swiss salaries to be paid to the team and any local supporting industry (only has 1 team to support so less viable). Attracting staff from the UK to work there is difficult as it is more difficult to go back.

I do agree that it is a shame that we just have F1 races here at the moment. Being in the EU made it a lot easier to organise events and teams in the UK.

I agree and hope you’re right, but I’m getting the impression that there’s a willingness to shift away from the U.K. very gradually.

Even Historic racing seems to be very ‘historic British’ racing now, with very little involvement from European teams. Still. Blue passports.

If the car doesn't have a V5, ie a race car you'll need a carnet for the EU now, there are agencies that'll do all the paperwork for you, you can either pay 40% of the value of the cars/motorcycles and equipment, or pay a one off insurance fee which isn't refundable, most people are doing this because they don't have £60K down the back of the sofa. I'm not sure what European teams have to pay to race here in the UK.

£50k deposit has been mentioned. However, times are tough, sponsors are a bit thin on the ground.
The Eurofinals at Santa Pod last year had three Top Fuel and four nitro Funny Cars. That will just be pure disappointment for those paying £40 ish per ticket. And there were no British TF teams.

Hmmm Carbon...let's hope these three will be close this season!

If what I read is right, and they are saving 6kg, what took them so long?
