Rega Planar 1 versus Planar 2

How about £49 now at Richer Sounds. If you only play the occasional record, that's a stonking bargain!

I can’t find any buying options for it but if anyone managed to get one at that price then they did indeed have a stonking bargain... I’d have picked one up for my daughter if I could have done. She already a system made up of older redundant linn kit but no turntable. Her and a couple of her friends are getting into vinyl and are mesmerised by my setup, her friends have Crossley type players but my daughter uses my kit under my supervision... if I could get her a decent deck for Crossley money, I’d be very happy. I do I have two Rega P5s, one having an Ortofon 2M Black cartridge, Neo PSU and a GT ref sub platter which I use a lot, and one in stock form with an Ortofon 2M blue cartridge that I rarely use which will eventually be gifted to her but I’m reluctant to put it in her room yet where her and her friends would use it unsupervised, they’re thirteen and thirteen year olds aren’t always as careful as they should be.

But Pro Ject turntables are as good as the Rega Planar?
I prefer Rega turntables generally although I out with a Pro-Ject Debut myself as a teenager and I thought it was great for £110, Rega’s entry price was closer to £280 at that by the time you’d fitted a cartridge, it was better but that was more than I could afford at 14 years old. If that Pro-Ject deck were made today it’d cost about £190 which brings it closer to the price of a Planar 1, which is without doubt a better deck.

I only sold a P2 fitted with an Elys last year for £180... and since then my daughter has decided to take an interest which is typical. I spotted a Planar 2 local for below £100 recently but missed it. I’m not in a rush, I’ll find her something.

Not in my book

Project has a confusing range of turntables, its a bit of a lottery how it sound.

I'd choose a Rega anyday of the week

For occasional listening a Planar 1 / Carbon is just fine, and not much if anything behind an old 90'ies Planar 3.
Not a fan of the Elys on the new Planar 3 so personally I changed from new P3/Elys to RP6/Carbon, the cartridge was temporary only.

Agree if you need better than P1 get the Planar 2, next is white belt, next is cartridge.

Make sure to use wallshelf or other good support, take care of adjust.

It is for ocasional listening, for regular listening I have my Apollo R/Rega DAC. My doubt if is my Densen B 110 would justify a Planar 2 to sound the best...And with the Planar 2 I would need a better phono amp, that´s more another 100€. The Planar 1 with a a rega Fono Mini would be just fine.

Ok, guys
I will decide if I should buy the Planar 1 or 2.If it is for occasional listening, the Planar 1.If I'm listening vinil regularly, so the 2.According with your opinions, the 2 is better for serious listenings

The Rega dealer here says the P3 is the better turntable.According to him, the P3 is much better than the 2. But it´s pricier:(What you think, sshould I save a bit and go for the 3 or just buy the 2 and enjoy? Is it true that the P 3 is so good? The P 3 comes with the tonearm RB 320

The Planar 3 really is a genuinely step up in performance and if you can afford/justify the price then I’d go for it. In order to know if you can justify it, you’ll need to have a listen. The 330 arm is a notable step up, the motor and PSU are of a higher grade and are compatible with a TT PSU, you get a higher grade bearing and a thicker glass platter and finale the bracing, so there are some significant differences between the Planar 3 and the lower models. For me it’d be a no brainier because I have around 2000 records and I like to play them but if you only have a handful that you play occasionally for nostalgic value then a Planar 1 or 2 is probably good enough.

“... they’re thirteen and thirteen year olds aren’t always as careful as they should be ...”

If she pays for the kit (even for a portion of the price) from her Saturday job pay/pocket money she will be careful.

Trust me, I’m working on that. She does get an allowance but blows it instantly on either total crap or jackets/shoes. I do want her to get a Saturday job or paper delivery round so as she can properly appreciate the value of money... and of course get a good work ethic.

Certainly, the P3 is a better turntable than the P2 but then again, the P6 is better still and that's the way it should be if Rega knows anything about designing turntables. Which you should buy depends on your budget and how much you will be playing records.

Yes, indeed.You are right o_O
Here the vinil records have a higher price than the cd´s...So I don´t know if is a wise decision to replace the cd player as the main source for a turntable like the P3!

I think I will get a Planar 2,according with my budget and as I don't want to spend much money on vinil recordings. It is only for occasional listening ;)
I might buy a few second hand records, too, but the cd player will continues the main source.

That is a sensible decision. If you do end up buying a lot of records then you can upgrade later if you feel the need by means of a cartridge upgrade on your P2, which is a very competent deck. Buying used vinyl is where a lot of the fun is for me!

I sold a P2 to a customer middle of January and he has found a local shop which specialises in s/hand vinyl, some as low as £2. Since he bought the turntable, he has spent more than it cost in buying records.:)

That’s the way it should be! Pointless having the kit and nothing to play on it.

And the phono stage for the Planar 2?I have been reading that the standard Carbon cartridge is ok, but is a budget catridge, so should I buy a budget phono stage like the Mini that goes well with the Carbon or go for the Fono MM?I want to keep the Carbon...
