rega dac, cdq, young dac bake off

I long ago came to understand that reading other people's conclusions about music reproduction as well as many other things is about as useful as having someone try out your future wife on the night before the wedding and tell you what he thought of her in the morning.

She was good. :D

Agreed- but at least we were able to try out all the preferred inputs......

HughJ got the wrong forum.
This is PFM, Not PNM.
PFM is the wife swapping, voyeur club
while the more conservative Prima Nocte Media is a more specific forum for the English lords
who get first screw of all Scottish brides or hifi kits named Linn.

I thought PFM was an Italian prog band?

One thing Guildford Audio suggested, was ''why not try a Wadia Ipod Dock.. that'll put the cat amongst the pigeons!'' -

I've been curious about it ever since !!

If you're reading this mate, would be fun to compare it as a transport with the laptop with my DAC..

you can put a WAV onto an ipod can't you? - I don't know, genuine question.

Obviously MP3 is a step backwards..

must admit though, even the 160gb Ipod would be way too small for me..

well you can put whatever itunes accept - so mp3, wav, aiff etc
my comment was rather size related, you gonna burn the memory very fast with uncompressed files
though on the other side i see no difference between using ipod as some sort of transfer medium, just as an external HD or USB flash or SD card - except it might be costly for that (with wadia deck)

Re size on ipod drive, unticking/ticking tracks within iTunes before sync allows changes as required when 160GB too small.

We quite often do exactly that: the Wadia docks can be upgraded to a very high level of performance via SPDIF - again, though, you have to get pretty spendy on clocks and power supplies for state of the art performance.

Really tough to get away from the cost penalty of doing SPDIF well: basically, you're saying to your system: 'now leave the clocking to me!' You have to be sure you can carry that burden if you take it on!!

Unless you throw ££££ at it, the bottom line is that computers are best paired with USB and Firewire specialist converters for max. value.

Hope I'm not tooo much OT:

So, transports on the day, any favorites for SQ....

I know there was a lot of dac's to listen to, and I think you did really well picking a favorite, as my brain would have been mush after about 5 hours :-o

As far as I can remember, from reading, there was a laptop, SB, two audio pc's and a Meridian that were transports?

Totally understand if dac's is the only thing that can be remembered :)

Cheers

I plugged in Si's battery power supply tonight to my M2 Tech Young DAC and the difference in sound cought me by surprise.
I have found the Young DAC to be everything I was wanting in a new DAC and didn't expect a dedicated or battery power supply to make much of a difference as my mains power running to the hifi is pretty much as good as it is going to get. Having a totally dedicated consumer unit directly after the meter. Then into a 3.2KA balanced torodial transformer. But it did. The music was far more intimate, dynamic, not more detail but the detail that was already there sounded so real and tangible. Deeper sound satge, more immediate, and just Far better all round!
I am continually amazed at what this little DAC can do. The Young DAC just keeps me well entertained and engrosed in my music.
And thanks to Keith for His introduction to the Young and his patience.

So why on earth would a "serious" hifi company sell a kilo£ piece of kit with a crappy wallwart that seriously limits the capability of their product?

Because it's a 1 kilo piece of kit, with the power supply it'd be a £1200 piece of kit.
