Record Shops RIP ...................................

Rather sad, this. Not just a record shop but a large and wonderful emporium of sheet music and instruments has closed it's doors after163years. Bugger.

I'm sorry.

One of my earliest memories was of this shop.

We had a piano off them, must have been early 70s , my sister learnt on it......and she now has it in northern ireland.

Rather more recently (millenium) I inherited my Grans (old Waldemar) piano.

I had it tuned by a local (blind)tuner. I was talking around the subject to him at the time and describing the family piano from Bath, the shop on the bridge. He said without hesitation "Duck Son and Pinker?".

I was only recalling this conversation last week.

I know this all going a bit off topic I recently had a 1904 briarwood pianola, been in the family from new and was in pristine condition. As a straight piano it was up there with the best of them. But it was Time for it to go (Big heavy bugger) and would you believe, I had to give it away.

I was told by several specialist paino dealers no demand, not worth a penny.

I know.

I've seen a few on freecycle, that shoiuldn't have been.

I had a second one that ended up in my garage. I needed the space and thought it was going to have to come apart. Thank God it did e bay.......for a penny.

I bought a fuzz pedal in Duck Son & Pinker is it. Or it might have been a phaser.

Shame they have gone there.

I went in there a few weeks ago, they were selling it cheap, keeping up with Amazon prices. Probably not getting the volume to make it viable.
All the vinyl had gone.

I 've had many a conversation with my Dad on how the high street shops can surivive with the online revolution.

:(

E.I.L website beats todays record store. never had a poor record and they are packed very well

Only if you are like your name and Rich is it. They are usually above average prices, only to be used as a last resort, like for that illusive Robert Poss record unavailable anywhere else.

Agreed. Never used eil cos they push the margin big time. OTOH checked out Spillers in Cardiff this arfternoon. Old but small. Moving there soon so will patronise them anyway but they ought to rethink the 'photocopy LP sleeve' policy. No romance in a photocopy.

Saying that I was in Bath last weekend and a bloke on a market stall next to Waitrose had some Beatles fan club & box set stuff that he had up for £300-500 a go.
I told him to get a home printer /scanner to copy the sleeves to avoid the inevitable

Opposite of RIP - but big shout for Wanted Records in Bristol. Loads of excellent 2nd hand vinyl, some of which is now mine. Mine!

I have that on the To Do list, I usually do the ones in Cheltenham Road, but will make a trip into the city for that one is it.

Went over the Severn Bridge today and visited this one, got a couple of vinyls, not too much for me is it. There are two other record stalls/shops adjacent with rock/metal.

I had better luck with the Rise up Park St, lots there, some bargains. If you are a Sun Ra fan there were loads of vinyls available there.

But overall I would still choose Cheltenham Road. Brizzle now has 8 vinyl shops on the go!

Report from York. Err not a lot. Only Replay open down Gillygate; that one along from Ye Olde Adult Shoppe has gone (Ark?). However...
...great vinyl fun to be had at Racecourse boot fair. Grabbed a minty Smiths 12" for a fiver, a rare Ginny Astley 7", an Ex/Ex Cost of Living E.P and the Smiths Headmaster Ritual Record Store Day thingummy. Try getting them ****ers on iTunes! Slim pickings in charity shops though with just an Edwyn Collins cassette single for 30 of the Queen's pence.

Hi there Ricky - What sort of stuff is in Replay York? I vaguely remember going there and not finding much is it. Any non-mainstream, post- or out there?
