Record Shops RIP ...................................

I went to the HMV at the Bond Street end of Oxford St yesterday is it.

Computers, headphones, tee-shirts, carry cases, games, DVDs, books, magazines, and even CDs in abudance - yes.

Records - No, And they used to have a specialist 12" vinyl dept until a year or two ago!

Not one is it.

Last month they had a token set of three - four racks selling Beatles and Rolling Stones LPs and other repress tat to tourists from Latvia, but now nothing there.

Hmv in Sheffield has a few current vinyl boxed sets in. Placebo and some others but that's it.

Delighted to see Fine City Records have set up at the top of Pottergate in Norwich. Mostly Vinyl. All s/h. Really old school type of store - i.e. they sell soul, jazz, easy listening, show tunes, punk, 50s, 60s, 70s. Picked up a copy of Big Black / Atomiser, Rapeman / 2 Nuns and a Packmule and a nice CBS Dave Brubeck / Countdown—Time in Outer Space.

I need to have a wander round some of the indie record/CD stores in Norwich.

I walk past them but never wander in.

Walked into HMV in Chapelfield the other day and the CD section is now down to less than a quarter of the shop.

Wasnt worth the effort.

Looked in Soundclash too - reasonable Jazz vinyl selection considering the size of the shop. I suppose most of his trade is DJs but I've shopped there since he had the stall in the indoor market.

I've bought a selection of vinyls from Soundclash before is it, I must go for another visit one day. If there is another shop for the 2nd hand, so much the better.

Norwich is a bit far away from everywhere through, but I do go to Kings Lynn now and again and could divert I suppose. There is a 2nd hand record shop in Kings Lynn btw.

I went past Rob's Records in That Manchester last week is it and it was all shut up, shutters down looked non-operational there.

Also I couldn't find Vox Pop the cafe and record shop, it used to be in the Northern Qtr, but I couldn't loclate it when I wanted a vegetarian bath bun and coffee whilst record shopping. Anyone spotted it recently?

Had a quick wander through Berwick St yesterday for the first time in a long while.

Sister Ray had a big pile of two quid vinyl that looked a bit charity shop. Lots of Neil Diamond if you like that sort of thing.

Reckless had some interesting bits. I asked how much they charged to clean records with the Loricraft cleaner on the counter. They explained that it was too much bother to clean customer records. Shame.

Sounds Of The Universe had all manner of intriguing things for sale. First stop next time I'm that way I think.

I find myself getting less and less each time I go to Sister Ray is it. Still not bad for Stoner / Space Rock / Drum'n'Bass. Reckless and MVE are certs for one or two finds. SotU is worth a look, but Phonica and Black Market do it better in their areas / genres is it.

Cambridge store is the same, not even any dance stuff.

Fopp had a bit of new vinyl, although not the new Black Mountain though.

Yesterday while in the city for the British Cheese Festival, I visited the relocated Spiller's in Cardiff. Great that they're still going!

Spillers, oldest record shop in the world as was is it.

And one of the RSAs is a big Merzbow fan there, added benefit.

Some interesting news from Malvern (not much happens here, usually): a website opening its warehouse to visitors. This weekend and next only but who knows what will happen in the future? An interesting and varied selection online; secondhand as well as new. Might try to visit if I don't go to the NAS.

...and they're doing 33% off online just for this w/e, code VINYL33 ;).

Big Star on Rundle Street, Adelaide has shut. Major bummer for south Australia and my favourite Aussie vinyl outlet too. Major rent increases were blamed - the landlord wanted clothing stores down the whole strip and a scuzzy little record store didn't fit the plan.

Planning a day out in That West London, I find that

Minus Zero and the siamese twin shop

Stand Out both shut in May this year is it.

Now, that was one peculiar set up, a long thin shop divided in half left and right with one front door, and the two owners Bill and Bill not speaking to each other much after a falling out. I found thier stuff a bit mainstream and 60's focussed, but worth a look now and again.

There was talk of Minus Zero doing something in one of the Portobello Market emporium mazes, so I have a look there.

Used to work in record shops in the St. Louis, MO USA area in the 70's, worked in stores in Hollywood in the 80's, and the 90's on & off. I really miss the freebies and the wonderful fellowship of music lovers such as meself.
