R U going to the Barber's ...?

George J

Herefordshire member
I am desperate, and not an effective self-groomer, apart from cutting myself with a razor.

I find that my barber is now open at 8:30 am.

Would it be not entirely senseless to be the first customer of the day in a small rural market town? Or should I simply accept that I am increasingly looking like the wild man from Borneo? And will look like balding mammoth in another couple of months!

Your thoughts will be gratefully read and digested.

Best wishes from George

We bought some Wahl clippers and my wife has been cutting my hair. It's not up to the standard of a barber, but it's good enough, and better than wild-man.
More pressing for me is a dental cleaning.

I'm gonna wait until the hordes have all gotten their first cut but even then might not because TBH it is still not really any different than when all this crap started.

We also bought some clippers. I've had 3 cuts so far, Mrs P-T is getting the hang of it. One more cut and the clippers will have paid for themselves in saved haircuts. Then I may go back to using by barber, if I want to. I will probably hold off for a bit longer yet as this thing is not by any means over.

You probably need to make an appointment.
Mine is booked up until August.
I got one for 10 days hence.

My wife got in early and got me a booking on the 15th of this month, which is the first day the hairdressers and barbers in Scotland are allowed to open. Just as well as I'm having to resort to wearing a hat when I go out at the moment as my mop is currently uncontrollable.

My wife and daughter have been using my new Wahl clippers on me, 4th trim on Sunday, they are getting better at it.

I went yesterday - walk-in; after c 4 months calvin was tending towards Cobain. 15mins of shearing was most cathartic.

My wife's (and daughter's) hairdresser visits at home, so got mine done already when she came round. Same price as the local barber but without the hassle/transport etc, and to be honest probably a better cut, so will probably keep doing that.
Could be worth having a look to see if you have any 'traveling barbers' recently set up locally?

I have booked myself in at the local hipster barber, they give you a one hour slot so there is no waiting. It has gone up from £18 to £20 but they do an excellent job & there is an excellent cafe one minute away which serves wonderful flat whites.

I am not doing any external socialising until I’ve had my hair cut. The only time I leave the house is to go cycling & I wear a helmet.

Been to the dentist: 3 sets of on-line forms to fill out before appointment. Pre-arrival call. Met at front door - temperature taken, hand gel, given a mask, more questions. Then off to the bathroom, hand washing, more questions, personal items bagged. Then off to treatment room - more hand gel and mouth wash x 4. Dentist herself was geared up to the teeth. All very professional. Also visited the barbers: everyone wearing masks, customers separated by temporary plastic (?) walls, number of people allowed in limited.

To the OP, plenty of Youtube videos on DIY haircuts if you don't want to venture out.

There is a barber next to the coop, reopened. People queueing round the corner. 4 seats operating, limited social distancing but visors and masks in use. I don't need a barber, haven't cut my hair in 8 years

The other services offered by the beautician in the back not restarted, which is a shame as I'd quite like a CSB instead of relying on bladed devices.

We have nice shiny new Wahl electric clippers and very sharp new scissors. I've been cutting Mrs. MikeMA's hair and she's been cutting mine. After four cuts each we think we have become quite proficient. Neither of us has much inclination to go back to our respective barbers and hairdressers as things are currently. I suppose we should really go to support the local economy.

I’m never going to the barbers again! Since discovering just how easy the #1 cut I always ask for is to do oneself with a fairly cheap set of Wahl clippers why pay good money and suffer awkward forced conversation? I’m ahead already as I’ve currently saved more in haircuts than the clippers cost me!

Oral B or Philips sonicare electric toothbrushes are really good at plaque removal.
