Outside Kruger you get a similar experience in Cape Vidal if staying in the Isimangaliso world heritage park on the Indian Ocean just south of Kruger. Go to the town in the evening to a restaurant and you always drive as you could well meet a Hippo in the street. The lake there has the largest population of hippos.

We've regularly used Airbnb for accommodation on our previous trips. There's some fantastic places to stay and they cost next to nothing. We've also stayed at some of the smaller private reserves around Kruger in the past but they can be expensive. We stayed at Mkuze Falls, which is just south of Kruger, for three nights in their best accommodation a few years ago:. Our Chalet:

We also had our own kitchen with a chef if we wanted to eat in the chalet plus an outdoor plunge pool. Morning and evening game drives were included but meals were extra. Don't know what it costs now but at that time it was £600 a night.
We also stayed at Struwig Reserve, which is 40kms off the road near Hoedspruit, adjacent to Kruger on the Oliphants River just south of Phalborwa which is at the other end of the price range. Even so we had a comfortable chalet overlooking the river with just a very low flimsy fence between us and the river so we were warned that anything could walk through! Access to Struwig is only possible in a 4x4.
