New Naim streamer preamp

Aesthetics, functionality, heritage and lack thereof aside - wish I could afford them. Would readily spend money on worse pursuits too.

The preamp part of the 222 is all analogue and a new design using trickle down ladder relay volume control from the statement pre-amp.
It kind of feels to me more like they’re catching up with other brands. For one example, Schiit has had relay based volume controls in relatively affordable preamps for a while now.

If it’s a great improvement and apparently not expensive to implement, I’m surprised it wasn’t done earlier. Maybe Naim needs to bring back the ‘.5’ naming convention for incremental changes/upgrades since the production runs tend be so long.

I think the 272 had a relay based volume control too though that particular implementation was not derived from Statement. There was a description on the Naim forum from one of the Linn techs yesterday.

I am a big Schiit fan. For the price of one NAIM box ($7,995 USD), you can get this much Schiit: Yggrdasil+ OG DAC, Loki MAX, Freya S, and 2x Tyr (2x 350W into 4 Ohms). I would dare anyone here to put that up against a NSC 222+NAP 250 costing 2x as much.

about £30 / m2. Which is pretty competitive compared to much of the market

Thats expensive for a product that has had no development since its release, lets face it, its going to cost naim, 40p a metre to buy in, they ain't making it.

Mind you as a consumer its one of those rare things that can genuinely be called an investment. I bet most are selling at more than they paid for it.

In fact, the 272’s volume control was also derived from Statement. ‘Derived’ can mean all sorts of course, from almost identical to vaguely similar. The 222 is effectively a 272 with the current streaming platform, a phono stage and balanced outputs. There’s nothing particularly revolutionary about it. Linn techs are probably not the most reliable source of information on Naim!

I have a 272 with a Teddy Pardo XPS and NAP300DR - the latter connected to the 272 by Witch Hat Morgana - and I have been waiting for the new streaming preamp for a while particularly for wider native streaming options.

if I were to seek to “slot in” the new 222 I would need to buy a new 2 tailed burndy -£529 and 2 new XLR to XLR mono cables at £229 each - if following Naim’s recommendations- so an extra £1000.

Of course other options exist - sell off the TPXPS and rely on the internal power supply, ask Witch Hat if they could modify the cables to RCA at the pre amp end to use the unbalanced outputs, spend £5.7k on a new Naim power supply, etc etc.

What I don’t understand is why there needs to be such a radical change in connectivity in particular to the older power amps - which is after all Naim’s heritage. For most of the range it’s always been DIN is best - but we’ll throw in some RCA for those that need it. Would it have been impossible to include balanced XLR plus unbalanced DIN/RCA?

I will be interested to hear what the new amps sound like but I may end up going towards other options such as Linn’s upgradeable Selekt DSM. ( I would just need to get new preamp to power amp cables ).

Will look forward to seeing a unit in the flesh, Naim products don’t photograph very well IMO.

I like Naim gear, generally preferring the sound of their cheaper stuff, but I’m never going to spend that kind of money on built in streaming.

Good luck to them though.

Cheers BB

I bet he uses NAC A5 at home.

Thats what he hinted at their forum by writing "we recommend"
Quite surprising the test staff don't use their mega expensive Super Lumina solution.

Staff has been very active and helpfull since release of the new Classic range.
Steve Sells wrote about having used the new combo at home a year or so, for test purpose - seem like a nice job.

I sort of gave up following the thread on their forum as people asked so many questions - the replies went in thousands
