Hmmm. Not much room in the boot for shopping, golf clubs or overnight bags.

My first car was an Avenger (1600). It was quite frugal on the fuel (40mpg) but certainly not high performance.

Space,

Yeah, but the cheetah accelerates to 60 MPH in a few seconds on its own. It's an amazing animal.

Joe

Yes that is Impressive, amazing really!

I wonder what speed it would reach if i dropped one out of a hot-air balloon?

I'll never get the chance now as i'm not allowed within a 50 mile radius of any Zoo, Wildlife Park, Pet shop, or Anne Widdecombe.

Sorry i've taken this off topic, lets bring it back.

Think about even if you do spend £60k on an Escort it's likely to end up like 99.999 % of all Mk1 and MkII Escorts ever, every person i know that's had either of these cars have ended up the same way, The natural habitat of the Escort Mk 1&2, is upside down in field.

I liked Ford’s sex magazine-based nomenclature for its cars. Fiesta and Escort.

Then they got a focus group in (Focus and Ka) and it all went wrong.

I remember hiring an Avenger back in the day. The agent made sure they told me where the light switch was.

In their wisdom Hillman fitted a rotary switch on side of steering column. Imagine jumping in to the car in dark and trying to find the switch!

Going back to the Stratos and rallying for a moment, rallying for me was about forests, and that special sound the cars produce in the forests. So much better than the monotonous effect of the ‘retro’ shows at old airfield circuits.

I went a few times when I was a lot younger, with my Dad, to some of the stages in Grizedale Forest... It used to be fascinating to hear, but not see the cars flying through in the early hours and when they got close, all you could see were the glowing brake discs :D

Didn't they have their headlights on?

This is what you can do with a well sorted Mk2 Escort (if you are prodigiously talented and have huge cojones...)
A good friend of mine helped to build that car.

Colin McRae's Mk2 Escort wasn't really a Mk2 Escort - it had Subaru IRS grafted on at the back.

Well none of the modern Mk2s are "Mk2s" in that case- modern engines like Duratecs, N/A YBs, Zetecs, throttle bodies, modern ignition and engine management, modern multi pot brakes, carbon panels, the list goes on.

Wouldn't be much of a rally car with a Kent engine and drum brakes.

You're right.

I dunno, a 135 bhp 1700 Kent to Caterham Supersprint spec would go a bit, and that's before you put in a BDA.

Not quite what I meant but indeed there are some hot Kents, Xflows and Pintos out there. Some of the Mk1 Escorts running Harris Pintos will even lift a front wheel on launch at santa pod. Serious engines though, cost as much as a half decent base Mk1/2 alone, cheaper to spend half the cost on a modern engine for the same or more power, which is why people do it.

Yes indeed, I know a chap who spent over £20k building a BDA to give about 220 bhp. A hotted up Zetec will do most of that for modest money, a Dura will match it for about £5k. Tell you what though, that BDA sounded *fantastic*.

A BDA Escort was the first rally car I heard being used in anger. Hockering Wood, Norfolk, 1984 I think. When it was out of our view I was convinced someone was riding a high powered ‘bike through the stage!

That experience has never left me.

I just checked on prices of Lancia Delta S4 Stradales, recently sold. One went at auction in April for 1m euros. My mate must be gutted. Sold his in the noughties for about £60k!
