New Ford Escort Mk 2 for sale shortly.

I went through heaps of mk1 & 2 escorts, starting with my mums old 1.3 mk2 gl. Highlights were mk2 ghia, mk2 Mexico and best of lot a Mk1 Mexico - red, white stripes, deep dish steel wheels and a type 49 shell. Decent suspension and a built 1660 motor was icing on the cake. I loved this car - in reality it was slower in the dry than a mk2 xr2i, but it was soo much fun to drive. In the wet simply sublime - you just spent the whole time in a controlled drift on tight B roads - lovely!

I now drive an Evo X, mapped to around 360hp - stupidly more competent to such an extent that’s its limits are simply crazy to reach on public roads. As an only car it’s perfect - if I had money for a second car? Wide arch mk1 Escort, 200hp plus motor with trick diffs and transmission :)

Well none of the modern Mk2s are "Mk2s" in that case- modern engines like Duratecs, N/A YBs, Zetecs, throttle bodies, modern ignition and engine management, modern multi pot brakes, carbon panels, the list goes on.

Wouldn't be much of a rally car with a Kent engine and drum brakes.
True, but the live rear axle defines much of how a Mk2 Escort handles. Even with a Watts linkage, 4-bars and Reiger 4-way-remote-reservoir dampers on the back - they still handle like a Mk2. Colin's car handles very differently - you can see that from the video.
